Today, it is not just the CTO or the CIO who talks about leveraging data but the entire C-Suite has woken up to the importance of integrating big data into organizations. Big data and analytics is not just one of the many technology trends but is a complete game changer, not just for enterprises but for entire industries and the business world is witnessing the birth of data centric business models. But, have big data and analytics really matured? The jury is still out on that one. But we can safely say that immense progress has been made to that end; case in point is the APAC big data analytics market. A recent survey by IDC concluded that APAC organizations are fast maturing in their capabilities to leverage Big Data and Analytics (BDA) technologies. 34 percent of these organizations have even progressed to more mature stages like repeatable and managed stage, which is close to a five-fold increase compared to only 7 percent in 2014. Although that is a big development, it must also be noted that 65 percent of these organizations still remain at the first two stages of leveraging big data analytics. So, a majority of the organizations in the region have just embarked on their big data analytics journey. In the region, Korea has been making major strides and is one of the fastest-growing countries in terms of big data analytics maturity. Australia, New Zealand, Korea and Singapore are leading in this segment followed closely by Hong Kong, China, Taiwan and India. It is safe to conclude that, the industry is maturing immensely, however, concerns such as complex implementations, data security etc still loom large. But the road ahead looks promising, especially with the infusion of AI in the big data mix. It is time for enterprises to take a full-fledged jump into the big data waters. It may seem a little daunting at the beginning, but troves of treasure await you on the other side.
