Exothermia: Model-based solutions for clean combustion

Grigorios Koltsakis, Scientific Director, ExothermiaGrigorios Koltsakis, Scientific Director

The next generation of combustion engines is dependent on rapid, robust, and reliable exhaust systems. Today, the developers of these engines rely heavily on cost- and time-intensive testing to minimize their pollutant emissions. Replacement of testing and calibration work with model-based techniques is increasingly adopted in the automotive industry. But, owing to the complexity in understanding the thermophysical processes and chemical reactions during real-world vehicle operation, generic models fail to give quantified results. Exothermia brings an effective solution to this problem by developing specialized simulation tools to analyze the efficiency of exhaust gas purification and enable cost-effective reduction of emissions from vehicles. The firm offers solutions to make the combustion engine more competitive and in line with the regulatory standards of environmental compliance.

The firm’s flagship software ‘axisuite’ simulates the exhaust after-treatment devices and systems. The modular software consists of solver modules for each of the actual components of a modern exhaust system such as catalysts, soot filters, and pipes. It enables the users to setup a virtual exhaust system using libraries of preconfigured exhaust system components and examine the auxiliary purification efficiency for a given vehicle 10-100 times faster than real time. Axisuite also allows users to test controls and diagnostic strategies on the computer thereby ensuring that the harmful emissions are controlled in all conditions.

To predict the composition of exhaust gas formed during the fuel combustion process, the firm renders an engine simulation tool ‘gasdyn’ which minimizes the need for data test to feed axisuite. Velodyn, one of the other vehicle simulator tools of Exothermia enables emission certification for the future vehicles that will be based on the Real Driving Emissions (RDE) mode.

Started as a spinoff company a decade ago, Exothermia has continuously thrived in the industry developing robust and stable solvers and user-friendly graphical user interfaces and workflows. The firm has also invested heavily in its R&D projects and industrial research programs in the area of emission control. These research projects empower the firm to improve the physical testing of the catalyst and further improve the accuracy of its simulation tools. The company takes pride in bringing together a multi-disciplinary scientific team of mechanical, chemical, and software engineers for rendering best-in-market simulation tools in the automotive domain.

Exothermia has also established strong relationships with top-notch OEMs across Europe and Asia. These partnerships have helped the firm to understand the challenges faced by OEMs in this region and develop timely and cost-effective solutions for them. The company has also build partnerships with universities and research institutes in Europe and Japan through its academic licensing program.

Over the years, Exothermia has earned a reputation of delivering best-in-class simulation tools to the automotive industry including car and truck makers and other engineering services companies. Recently, the firm worked with Toyota and helped them develop predictive models for catalyst performance deterioration due to sulfur exposure and further improve the performance through desulfation. This association assisted the client in enhancing the engine control strategies and minimizing the fuel penalty during sulphur removal at every possible vehicle operating conditions.

Exothermia currently emphasizes on developing solutions to address the challenge of Real Driving Emissions (RDE) for conventional and electric-hybrid applications. These solutions are developed along with the company’s partners in Germany and Italy, and will ensure that a car delivers low pollutant emissions. Since its genesis, the company has maintained a customer centric approach and has helped its clients in improving workflow with the most appropriate simulation models. “Simulation is about finding the best tools to work with, and thus we work very closely with our customers and help them customize solutions according to their specific needs,” concludes Grigorios Koltsakis, Scientific Director.
