Underpinnings of the regulations and standards that are currently enforced were instituted prior to the emergence of new-age technologies such as mobility, cloud and IoT. An overhaul in those regulations and standards is highly called for.Cloud computing, for instance, has seen rapid adoptions in many sectors, mostly because of its enhanced services and cost benefits. However, it still faces serious challenges from organisations operating in regulated industries who demand stringent compliance requirements. Any data loss by third party cloud vendor can pose serious implications to the organisation involved. A particular case we looked at is when a healthcare provider wanted to secure its patient-related medical data on a public cloud, the company has to ensure that the third party cloud services provider is actually HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) compliant. Unfortunately, there were not many cloud vendors meeting these criteria. So far, the innovations in compliance space has not fully kept pace with the incredible rate at which technologies are evolving. But we believe that will change as technology matures and new standards around security evolve. Good news is that, in few cases, we have found that vendors' cloud deployments are indeed following regulatory compliances, sometime more rigorous than those of the customers they serve. And their number is growing. Vendors are so waking up to the need to adhere to the compliance requirements. On that note, we present to you a special edition on emerging trends in compliance. Hope this edition serves your needs as you look forward to adopting and reap benefits from emerging technologies.Annie JohnsonManaging Editoreditor@apacciooutlook.comCompliance as Your GatekeeperLane Adams Clara MathewRoyce D'SouzaSudeshna MazumdarAlfred MardinLouis BeckerRachael ClarkSelena JamesStephanie MazueraRoy ChowLalrindiki SailoSoumik Ghosh
