June 20196 In a short span, IoT has drastically changed the top-priority objectives for logistics companies. Rather than worrying about moving goods from Point A to Point B, the logistics industry is now hard-pressed to ensure on-time delivery, product lifecycle transparency, and supply chain visibility--to drive improved productivity for every stakeholder within the supply chain. With mobile connectivity meeting vehicles and containers equipped with sensors, logistics companies are able to provide its clients with real-time location and asset tracking, thereby transforming the entire transport chain. Through the effective application of IoT, the transportation and logistics industry is witnessing a number of benefits such as cost-saving and reduced emissions, flawless inventory management, new fleet management solutions to improve workflows and customer satisfaction, and faster communication. Importantly, end-user data has become increasingly available which leads to easier transactions. Moreover, global operators--especially those in the shipping industry--are able to seamlessly track shipments without the need to communicate. As more companies trudge toward IoT, the whole industry will be better connected, which would eventually lead to increased customer demand and lower total cost of ownership for organizations in the transportation and logistics space. A logistics company without efficient inventory management and warehousing system and automated processes for fast delivery and safe storage is doomed to fail in today's marketplace. Since the industry is willing to wholeheartedly embrace IoT, it's only a matter of time until modern telematics systems, drones and autonomous vehicles infiltrate the logistics sector. Currently being tested for application by global industry leaders, drones and droids have the capability to bring unprecedented levels of speed and efficiency to supply chains across the retail, logistics, agriculture, and e-commerce sectors. These new technologies will soon drive the logistics industry. For example, drones can improve business process automation by delivering faster transportation of goods, instant in-store delivery, and smarter inventory tracking and management. The autonomous vehicles will also able to resolve last-mile delivery complexities that have plagued the logistics industry for decades. Self-driving cars could also potentially minimize car accidents, reduce operating costs, and optimize road traffic.
