3D Surveys: Unleashing the Potential of 3D Data

Adam Spencer, CEO, 3D SurveysAdam Spencer, CEO
For almost a decade, 3D Surveys has been providing 3D surveying services to multiple industries across Australia, including construction, civil, engineering, and architectural. In fact, the company has recently introduced the first two, custom built plug and play 3D Level control systems in South Australia. These systems have allowed control of asphalt placement to millimeter precision, saving hundreds of thousands of dollars in wastage and achieving the highest of tolerances. “We are a pioneer of new technology into construction, using it in ways that has never been done before, creating workflows and solutions that save clients time and millions of dollars,” says Adam Spencer, CEO of the company.

3D Surveys’ construction services include setting out of bulk, earthworks, underground services, kerbs, and asphalt levels through to the foundations of residential properties, gridlines, precast and formed concrete, holding down bolts and structural steel on commercial projects. Similarly, for engineering clients, the company focuses on topographic detail surveys, for small home builds and renovations, right through to large detail surveys for developments and government road project design. 3D Surveys also fortifies clients with automation services for machinery and equipment that can be controlled or guided by GPS or robotics total stations allowing an operator to work directly from a design model without the need for workers on the ground.

3D Surveys captures the construction sites in 3 dimensions, utilizing its fleet of HD surveying equipment, known as scanners that can capture at the rate of millions of points per second providing detailed point clouds of site conditions at any given time.

We are a pioneer of new technology into construction that has never been done before, creating workflows and solutions that save clients time and millions of dollars

This data is then used for modeling structures, as-built, and as-constructed information along with volume calculations and other 3D Models. Finally, the company’s cadastral services oversee all boundaries, from simple identification surveys and block pegging through to property development, land divisions, and legal disputes to create plans. “We follow our findings up with detailed plans and reports for our clients, providing a piece of mind and confidence to proceed.”

With these services, the company is able to achieve higher precision and forecast estimates with a higher degree of accuracy, which in turn has given clients confidence when negotiating contracts. Recently, 3D Surveys utilized its 3D Scanners to identify survey control and volume discrepancies on a major infrastructure project, saving the client an estimated $1-1.5m loss. Another client was faced with fabricating a structure in 3 different workshops scattered across the state. This structure was then transported to Sydney for erection at the International Airport. 3D Surveys’ team completed the high accuracy conformance reporting and dimensional control, including virtual fit-ups of all the sections to allow confidence once on site. “Our surveyors offer decades of experience with exposure to all kinds of problems, and we use only the most accurate equipment which achieves extremely precise results,” explains Spencer.

The company firmly focuses on providing solutions to problems and adding value to client’s projects. As trailblazers in the 3D modeling industry, the company’s workflows are often alternative to the status quo, so clients need not change their entire processes. “My passion for doing it differently and achieving things that others have thought impossible separates us from our competitors,” says Spencer.

3D Surveys’ focus is on strengthening its position as one of the leading consultants for 3D laser scanning, structure surveying, and 3D modeling along with providing machine automation and 3D Level control for Asphalt Pavers and Milling machines. After a phase of restructuring and consolidation, the company is set to expand into other markets and add services to its current repertoire in the 4th quarter of 2019. “Once again we will be looking to introduce new equipment and alternative workflows to deliver outstanding outcomes and add value for our clients,” adds Spencer.
