Bentley Systems: Advancing Asset Lifecycle and Performance

    Follow Bentley Systems on :

CEO,Greg Bentley, Bentley SystemsGreg Bentley, CEO
In a digital-first world, the application of automation, machine learning, and the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) is no doubt indispensable. But take a closer a look and eventually, it all boils down to effective utilization of data and analytics generated by these systems. Specifically, when it comes to asset-intensive industries, with thousands of assets making up a facility or network, the intensity of information generated is enough to rock the boat. Oftentimes the data generated is scattered across diverse and siloed systems in IT and operations and firms fail to aptly leverage and harness all this information. While enterprise asset management (EAM) in the past was primarily seen as a means to keep the lid on costs, today it's perceived as a game-changer that holds the potential to reconfigure a firm's market value, improve production, and deliver seamless operations.

When it comes to superior asset performance and management, one company that needs no introduction is Bentley Systems. Since its inception in 1984, the company has remained majority-owned by its five founding Bentley brothers and is currently headed by Greg Bentley, CEO. From humble beginnings, today the company has offices in over 50 countries around the world and generates hundreds of millions of dollars in revenue. At the core, Bentley Systems is a software development company that delivers solutions for the entire lifecycle of the infrastructure asset, tailored to the needs of the various professions.

    Structured Control of Assets

To improve overall accessibility, quality, integrity, and relevance of asset data in context, the company's asset lifecycle information management software, AssetWise is a silver bullet. It is designed to optimize asset performance across any industry whether in utilities, oil and gas, or power generation. The software is sold either as subscription offering or delivered via tailored managed services.

Built on Bentley’s interoperable technology, AssetWise leverages Bentley’s unique connected data environment to create, collect, manage, and control information. The solution sifts through vast amounts of structured and unstructured information, control documents, records, and delivers accurate information for engineering, operations, and maintenance of assets. By linking regulations, contractual requirements, and specifications directly to asset data, AssetWise provides support throughout the lifecycle of assets to ensure compliance with government, industry, and corporate regulations. Inefficient infrastructure and information management is especially detrimental in asset-intensive industries as it may give rise to safety and environmental hazards, cause downtime, and negatively affect customer service.

AssetWise supports a series of capabilities that is unparalleled. From asset registry and tag management, spatial and linear networks management to configuration and change management, the solution covers it all. To increase asset availability, AssetWise even features a centralized asset health dashboard that consolidates and tracks asset condition to facilitate quick decision-making. To discover hard-to-see patterns in data, the company uses data science, MS Azure, and machine learning to create accurate predictive models. With data-driven, self-learning models, which require little or no human interaction, anomalies can be detected much in advance.
Information from AssetWise can be used in third-party systems while information from one or more third-party systems can be leveraged within AssetWise via a single, managed interoperable connection.

Under a 'success plan,' model Bentley Systems includes everything a client needs to set up and configure project templates and managed workspaces, as well as security and rights management

Keeping in mind that high-quality, reliable assets can ensure optimal value, the company also offers asset reliability software that enables proactive strategies for long-term asset reliability and performance. Using the software, organizations gain access to advanced analytical, machine learning, and data science techniques that predict asset failures or operational events.

    Amplify Asset Value

In the case of an American gas and electric utility holding company based in the southern U.S., AssetWise was deployed as the cradle-to-grave asset management system. The goal of this $3Mn project was to allow information to flow across disciplines, departments, and organizations from an asset’s inception in conceptual design through operations and eventual decommissioning. The client used AssetWise for provisioning data to Maximo, the client’s computerized maintenance management system. The utility company's asset-related data is now centralized, linked, and consistent with design procedures, standards, and guidelines across all of its engineering disciplines and outsourcing partners.

To throw further light on AssetWise's unique value proposition, the case in point of a U.S. based global food processing and commodities trading corporation is befitting. They wanted to implement an asset management process across its geographically dispersed processing plants to increase safety, compliance, and operational integrity of plant assets. The client was also looking at optimizing capital planning costs associated with the inspections. The trading corporation installed AssetWise at four of its large geographically dispersed processing operations. Bentley software was used as the foundation for maintaining their mechanical integrity and better collect, analyze, communicate, and understand risk exposure as well as determine the most effective inspection processes. Bentley's single platform for analysis and data management along with its interoperability was instrumental in the effective implementation of the trading corporation's $1 million project.

To fully realize the potential of building information modeling (BIM) in a connected data environment the company has also released AssetWise CONNECT to make the most of digital engineering models. Always a step ahead of the industry, the solution through immersive digital operations enables a client to view their current asset information in 3D and reality models. All a user needs to do is select an element in graphic view and AssetWise will display the underlying data related to the asset, including related documents, maintenance history, geospatial coordinates, degradation data, and more.

Leaving no stone unturned to present an outcome-based solution for clients, Bentley Systems has a host of managed and professional services and service level agreements that maximize the productivity and efficiency of assets. Under a 'success plan,' model Bentley Systems includes everything a client needs to set up and configure project templates and managed workspaces, as well as security and rights management, i-model automation, and plotting and publishing frameworks. The model guarantees access to engineers and performance consultants who provide an annual health check, performance assessments, and software assessments. For clients looking for that extra push, Bentley Systems offers premium managed services that comprise 24x7 support and execution of business processes including project administration, CAD management, and document control. To get the best result out of Bentley software applications, the company's professional services include infrastructure and industry subject matter experts, program managers, certified project managers, and professional engineers, spanning over 40 distinct competencies.

Always looking at new avenues to expand their footprint and expertise, recently Bentley Systems acquired ACE enterprise Slovakia, provider of innovative technology solutions to interface with enterprise resource planning (ERP), enterprise asset management (EAM), and geographical information systems (GIS). This move was to further support Bentley's digital twin cloud services to uniquely synchronize with enterprise IT, OT, and ET data sources.

With eyes set on the future, Bentley Systems will continue to invest in research and development and partnerships that are set to offer new opportunities in innovation.
