The healthcare sector requires rapid mobilization both technologically and structurally to handle the constantly evolving cyber threats, as this sector is a fairly recent target. The Healthcare and Public Health Sector Coordinating Council (HSCC) recognizes its accountability to its customers, patients and sector as a whole, and by taking note of the cross-sector interdependencies, works together to improve the situation.

The National Health Information Sharing and Analysis Center (NH-ISAC) partnered with the Anomali platform to provide more infrastructure to healthcare data and improve its cybersecurity collaboration options. Anomali is vital as healthcare providers frequently have limited resources to collect, analyze and understand cybersecurity threats.

Threat sharing is significant to healthcare organizations, especially in the current cybersecurity scenario. As one feeds data and draws conclusions, an actionable set of cybersecurity threats are found that aids in the reduction of attack surface, reduce threats and vulnerabilities and gives rise to improvements and better responses.

Healthcare has several sub-sectors, provided for by hospitals and family practices, pharmaceutical companies, medical device makers, insurance companies and the payers. However, personal health data is a common element across these sectors, and it becomes necessary to share intelligence about the kind of threats and attacks on this data. Personal health data includes medical history, date of birth, payment and credit card information and a variety of information valuable in the black market.

The safeguarding of healthcare data requires uniformity about cybersecurity. Identifying the threat profiles to the healthcare sector is the first step in ensuring its safety. It is high time the government recognizes the need for smart regulations over several scattered laws of the constantly evolving healthcare sector. Steps should be taken so that the private sectors can ensure the safety, security, and privacy of patients without being entangled in cumbersome restrictions.
