Legal Miner: Architects of New Age Data Analysis

Morris Tu,CEO, Legal MinerMorris Tu, CEO
It all started in the famed hallways of the UC Berkeley School of Law, where Morris Tu was pursuing advanced law. While there, he was fascinated with the innovation in the Bay Area that inspired him to unleash his passion for technology, to revamp the legal profession still caught in the archaic web. “It could and should be reformed by AI and internet technologies, and I wanted to be the one to make the change happen,” recalls Tu. En route his career trajectory Morris joined one of the leading law firms in China, King&Wood Mallesons (KWM) as their international partner. At KWM, his insights on legal tech innovations gathered momentum with an amalgamation of ideas infused with encouragement from his colleagues and partners. Legal Miner was born. And Tu’s career takes an interesting turn from an attorney to a legal technology entrepreneur—the CEO of Legal Miner.

Today, organizations in their quest to steer ahead of the competition understand that they have to equip themselves with advanced technologies to improve efficiency. Top on the agenda is ensuring corporate compliance, monitoring operating risks, preventing potential loss, improving company governance, and powering decision-making, which is effectively met by Legal Miner’s state-of-the-art products and services.

Legal Miner’s flagship product, Business Risk Management Solution (BRMS) is a comprehensive and integrated analytical system for corporate and industry litigation analysis that addresses the industry need to monitor and manage the potential risks.
Utilizing AI, machine learning, and semantic analysis, BRMS can do deep mining, and processing of fragmented Chinese legal, industry and commercial data, automatically producing instant industry and professional litigation data analysis. Legal Miner’s SaaS-based solution coupled with consulting solutions help clients prevent potential loss and make wise business decisions invariably saving on time, money, and resources.

In a particular instance, a bank in China was finding it difficult to collect all litigation information as the information was not consolidated on one website. The bank had to search more than 3500 court websites, to identify each customer’s potential credit risk. Legal Miner consolidated the litigation data of more than 3500 court websites across the country and structured it, which helped the bank search litigation information in a faster way. Based on that information, they could make a reasonable judgment on whether a loan should be given or if there is a potential risk of default.

On the anvil is a new product, IP Elite that helps protect IP properties and prevent loss due to IP infringement. IP Elite provides services in IP management, protection, online electronic evidence conversation, and IP case searching. Organizations are unable to search related cases or IP owners in a quick and accurate manner. Legal Miner offers them a connected platform that enables them to search for IP infringement cases and relate all the cases to IP ownership, which powers their IP protection solutions.

The Legal Miner think tanks have developed a set of techniques known as LAB Intelligence based on machine learning, natural language processing, and semantic analysis. “We use LAB Intelligence to collect and dig information from court decisions, government notices, corporate statements, and other documents and reorganize the pieces into useful business solutions and legal insights,” says Tu. “By integrating AI technology into legal service, LAB Intelligence makes us unique in the legal tech industry.”

With an expert team comprising global talent, Legal Miner is the only Chinese company included in Legaltech List of Standford CodeX. “We plan to partner with global firms and build Legal Miner as an international brand offering a comprehensive business solution,” ends Tu.
