Mark Gurry & Associates: Enterprise Databases, Engineered Right

Follow Mark Gurry & Associates on :

    Mark Gurry, CEO
For many organisations, the real challenge is not technology. It is access to senior specialist capability when it matters most. Projects stall, upgrades drag, and performance issues linger when teams rely on mixed-experience support models. MGA operates differently as a senior-only consulting and managed services firm. Every engineer is deeply experienced, hands-on, and capable of resolving issues end-to-end without escalation. This ensures faster diagnosis, lower risk, and better outcomes where judgment matters most.

Mark Gurry & Associates (MGA) is purpose built for this mandate, with a senior only consulting model spanning every major platform and modern deployment pattern, from Oracle and SQL Server to PostgreSQL/ TimescaleDB, SAP HANA, MySQL, Redis, Kafka and SOLR, across on prem, hybrid and multi cloud environments. The results are core systems that stay secure, high performing, and always available. All this while delivering measurable outcomes that save time, money and risk.

“Embedded in transformation, we help design cloud migration strategies, deliver performance engineering during application rollouts, and build observability frameworks that elevate metrics into business insight,” says Mark Gurry, CEO.

Hybrid Cloud and Real Time Data, Optimized

MGA’s end to end database service blends deep platform skills with a full stack command of middleware and integration, so gains hold under production pressure instead of collapsing at peak. Senior consultants design and run hybrid architectures on AWS, Azure and Google Cloud, orchestrating staged moves from legacy to open source or multi cloud strategies without service disruption, with auditable control. Fluency in PL/SQL, Transact SQL and PG/SQL pairs with expertise in WebLogic, Kafka, Java, REST and XML to isolate root causes across application, database and network layers, delivering durable fixes, not one off tuning.

Real performance stands up in peak, not just in tests.

This cross platform expertise helps clients avoid vendor lock in while right sizing licenses and adopting best fit architectures that reflect workload reality rather than vendor momentum. MGA has executed multiple cross database migrations, including Oracle to Postgres projects that converted stored procedures for mission critical ingestion and designed bidirectional replication between Oracle and Postgres for resilience in national environments. For a legal services firm that is partitioning and compressing a long horizon time transaction table with hundreds of millions of rows, it reduces month end from hours to minutes. A chronic bottleneck becomes predictable throughput.

“Real performance stands up in peak, not just in tests,” states Gurry.

    Performance and Security, Engineered Together

Performance at MGA is engineered end-to-end, not just at the database layer. The team routinely diagnoses and resolves issues across SQL, application logic, messaging layers, caching, JVM tuning, network throughput, storage latency, TLS overhead, and cloud workload patterns. The goal is not simply to tune queries, but to ensure that the entire architecture performs reliably under peak load.
In one energy project, tuning Postgres TLS to meet strict internal certificate authority policies ran alongside load optimization, proving speed and security can move forward together. MGA routinely validates at four times expected production volumes and tests failover and catch up behavior, so limits are evident before users feel them.

Architecture follows consumption patterns, routing queries to segment real time from historical workloads in Postgres to keep dashboards at less than two seconds under full concurrency, matching how the business reads its data.

Senior consultants resolve a large variety of wait events, TCP socket issues, lock contention, JVM tuning, plan stability, and memory sizing with the confidence that comes from solving the same problems in production at scale. The outcomes are tangible with reclaimed storage instead of new hardware, reduced licensing without lock in, operational processes that hit their windows, and systems that clear audits without throttling throughput.

“At MGA, performance and security are engineered together and not traded off,” explains Gurry.

    Utility Scale, Real Time Results

A major energy provider needed near-real time processing of power quality telemetry for more than one million meters reporting every five minutes, with expansion in sight. MGA designed a TimescaleDB solution on AWS EC2, created continuous aggregates for fast analytics, implemented exception based alerting, and tested ingestion with Kafka to validate sustained load and post failover catch up. The platform sustains ingestion at utility scale, keeps field dashboards under two seconds, supports regulatory compliance, and scales toward multi million meter fleets, cutting data latency significantly versus the prior R based environment.

"Embedded in transformation, we help design cloud migration strategies, deliver performance engineering during application rollouts, and build observability frameworks that elevate metrics into business insight.”

Similar telemetry, voltage swing detection, and high availability patterns now support safety, compliance, and capacity planning across energy operators in regulated environments.

MGA’s performance discipline extends into legal, government, healthcare and transport sectors, where end of month, end of year and regulatory windows leave no margin for error. Load testing for market changeovers run Day in the Life, Soak, Sociability, and Breakpoint scenarios across integration, middleware, databases and UI at four times production scale to validate endurance when it matters. The takeaway is consistent; sub second to sub two second experiences at scale are engineered— not accidental—and they depend on a stack wide view that anticipates pressure points before deployment.

    Senior Only Consulting, Measurable ROI

MGA’s senior only model eliminates handoffs and escalations, accelerates diagnosis, and lowers risk precisely when judgment decides outcomes—at peak demand, at cutover, and under audit. Every consultant sees the entire stack—from cloud and network to SQL and application logic—which is why clients grant production access and expect decisive action, not ticket triage. This operating model converts expertise into ROI across cost, resilience and performance—whether it is storage reclaimed instead of bought, licenses optimized without vendor dependence, or processes that land on schedule week after week.
Results span industries. Storage reclamation on enterprise platforms avoid large hardware spend while introducing ongoing savings with archive and purge frameworks later adopted by other operators. Consolidation and tuning reduced SQL Server hosting costs materially while improving manageability and reliability. Cross database replication between Oracle and Postgres added resilience to national systems, while Redis caching enabled low latency access to real time meteorological datasets under heavy load.

“At MGA, performance and security are engineered together and not traded off.”

These outcomes reinforce Mark Gurry & Associates’ standing as a trusted authority, not just a service provider, which matters when the measure of success is uptime and audit ready performance at scale.

Ready for the Future, Built for Now

Enterprises are modernizing in place while shaping what comes next, and MGA stages change so today stays stable, tomorrow gets faster and cheaper, and observability rises from system metrics to business insight. Partnerships with Oracle, Microsoft, EDB Postgres and TimescaleDB keep options open—license optimization on enterprise platforms, selective open source adoption, or longer run moves to multi cloud—matched to risk, budget and capability. With the global shortage of experienced DBAs, continuity is as valuable as capability. MGA provides both by delivering immediate senior expertise and leaving behind build documents, health check scripts, dashboards and runbooks that make resilience repeatable.

Support models match the consequence. Offerings include business as usual managed support, senior DBA expertise on demand, and emergency troubleshooting, with severity based response and rapid escalation for critical incidents. For both managed cloud databases and VM hosted estates, administration spans capacity planning, performance tuning, HA/DR readiness, proactive monitoring, and audit aligned controls. An optional, fully managed model extends to incident and change coordination, oversight of patching and upgrades, and participation in daily operational reviews. At the same time, clients retain strategy, governance, licensing and non database incident domains.

Where estates remain partially managed, the client retains change and incident ownership, with MGA providing proactive monitoring, best practice recommendations, HA/DR readiness, and patching guidance. Transitions begin with a short, structured health assessment to validate stability, security posture, and monitoring efficacy—reviewing logs, patch posture, tool coverage, and recent vendor cases—before moving to steady state support.

MGA proves that databases can remain secure, scalable and fast when senior expertise drives every decision, and that modernization can be practical and safe when engineered at the intersection of architecture, performance and security. From reclaiming storage and cutting licensing costs to enabling real time analytics and validating under four times production load, the firm converts ambition into measurable outcomes that hold up during production.

In a world where downtime is unacceptable and speed is a competitive edge, MGA’s senior only, cross platform, cloud ready, secure by design model reads less like differentiation and more like an operational necessity for enterprises that expect systems to perform when it matters most.
