3 Tech Trends in Wireless Technology

Annie Johnson, APAC CIO Outlook | Thursday, August 13, 2020

Advancements in wireless technology will be driven by the need for power efficiency, operational longevity, and improved security features.

FREMONT, CA: Wireless technology plays a major role in the modern communication system. The emerging technologies, including drones, robots, self-driving vehicles, as well as medical equipment, are all contributing to the wireless revolution. When it comes to tech trends for wireless communication, several underlying challenges and opportunities within the wireless landscape determine the direction as well as the velocity of future advancements. For instance, the longevity of wireless protocol, spectrum congestion, wireless security, and system architectures like power consumption and edge computing are directly impacting the innovations in wireless technology. Here are the emerging tech trends in wireless technology.

    5G Cellular Systems

The elimination of the use of wire or cable for communication purposes is the major transformation that will come with the successful deployment of 5G wireless technology. Although 5G cellular systems are beginning to be deployed, a comprehensive rollout of the technology will still take a few years.

Embedded wireless sensors will enable the conventional as well as self-driven vehicles to communicate with other vehicles and with road infrastructure. The drive towards autonomous vehicles is also encouraging manufacturers to focus on embedded wireless sensors. Apart from the exchange of information, wireless automation includes a wide range of services such as navigation support, safety capabilities, fuel-saving, and vehicle tracking.

    Backscatter Networking

A backscatter network can transmit data with minimal power consumption, targeting small networked equipment. The technology operates by re-modulating ambient wireless pulses. Backscatter networking can be used in applications where an area is saturated with wireless signals, and there is a requirement of relatively simple IoT devices like sensors in offices and smart homes. Thus, technology is a real advancement while tackling the challenges for IoT devices with limited network lifetime due to finite battery capacities.

As stated earlier, wireless innovations will be influenced by a range of factors determining the viability of new devices. Thus, firms must understand the various constraints and requirements before investing in wireless innovations.
