APAC Retailers Harnessing Technology for Eco-Friendly Transformation

    Apac CIOOutlook | Thursday, November 09, 2023
    Tweet

APAC retailers are making significant progress in using technology to reduce their environmental impact. This is a positive development, as the retail sector is a major contributor to greenhouse gas emissions and other environmental impacts.

FREMONT, CA: The Asia-Pacific (APAC) region is home to some of the world's largest and fastest-growing retail markets. With a rapidly growing population and rising incomes, consumer spending in APAC is expected to reach USD 28.9 trillion by 2025. However, this growth also comes with a significant environmental impact. The retail sector is responsible for around 10 per cent of global greenhouse gas emissions. In recent years, APAC retailers have been increasingly turning to technology to reduce their environmental impact. This is being driven by several factors, including:

Growing Consumer Awareness of Sustainability Issues: Consumers in APAC are becoming increasingly aware of the environmental impact of their consumption habits. As a result, they are demanding more sustainable products and services from retailers.

Government Regulations: Governments are introducing increasingly stringent regulations to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and other environmental impacts from the retail sector.

Cost savings: Retailers can save money on energy and waste disposal costs by adopting sustainable practices.

How APAC Retailers are Using Technology to Reduce Their Environmental Impact

Retailers in the APAC are taking proactive steps to minimise their environmental footprint through a multifaceted approach. They are increasingly embracing renewable energy sources like solar and wind power to curtail their dependence on fossil fuels. Simultaneously, these retailers are adopting energy-efficient practices, such as LED lighting and motion sensors, aimed at curbing their energy consumption.

Waste reduction strategies are being employed throughout the supply chain, and sustainable transportation alternatives, including electric vehicles, are being harnessed to mitigate emissions. With an anticipated investment of USD 100 billion in sustainability initiatives by 2024, the retail sector is poised to make substantial strides in environmental conservation. These efforts could lead to a noteworthy 20 per cent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions and a 10 per cent decrease in water consumption by 2024, illustrating the sector's commitment to a greener, more sustainable future.

APAC retailers are increasingly using technology to reduce their environmental impact. This is driven by several factors, including growing consumer awareness of sustainability issues, government regulations, and cost savings. The investment in sustainable technologies is expected to lead to a significant reduction in the environmental impact of the retail sector in APAC in the coming years.
