Organizations which are using the power of Big data to deliver productivity, have now found themselves in a position where they could increase the quality of their products and services. This impact of Big Data has spread across industries, and with advanced analytics stemmed from IT-enabled innovation taking the centre stage, the transformation of the global industry is crystal clear. As recently Martin Ashby, APAC principal with Hortonworks, told CSO Australia, “Increasing standardisation of big-data techniques had driven a surge in the use of the technologies to aggregate both structured and unstructured data for later analysis”
Martin further explained about the growing expansion of the Big data technology across domains and sectors. Focussing on the security analytics and the Big Data platforms that have become invaluable for an organization's information security needs, Martin said, “Once you can start to look at the bigger picture and business information, you can then start to look at things like security threats. When there was a single breach in the system, it wouldn't necessarily have been protected until you start to detect a certain level of things.” When the information is not properly captured, the data may not be very accessible, resulting in inefficient methods to crack down these threats.
Among the many successes of Big data security analytics, Big Data vendor Splunk has stood as a perfect example. The company recently reported that fully 40 percent of its worldwide business – and half in Australia – is related to the collection and analysis of security data.Splunk has built a robust analytics business on top of the open-source Hadoop platform. It has provided an important base for businesses to store bulks of security-related information.
