EasyStack Enables Creation of the Largest Chinese Research Cloud Platform

FREMONT, CA: Tsinghua University Institution of Interdisciplinary Information Sciences chooses EasyStack as its partner to build the largest Chinese research cloud platform. The Tsinghua University, a research university located in Beijing, China, and one of the nine members in the elite C9 League of universities, chose EasyStack as its partner to build this OpenStack Cloud Platform.
The research cloud platform consists of 6000 cores, 16 TB memory and 540TB storage. The cloud platform was used to perform research by the Tsinghua University Institution of Interdisciplinary Information Sciences on emerging topics such as Scientific image processing, Cryo-EM, Protein Structure, online education data analyses, social network analyses, natural language processing and DNA sequencing, to name a few.
The project has reduced the university’s data center capital expenditure (CAPEX) by 60%, IT management tasks by 33%, and electricity costs by 80%.
More computer clusters are required in research projects, and using a single HPC cluster for processing single research projects are no longer sufficient. Traditional IT architecture is archaic as it doesn’t allow the scientist to fully concentrate on the research itself. OpenStack provides an efficient and powerful platform to perform research and has taken the world by storm.
High Availability and reliability of EasyStack’s ESCloud, has set it above other OpenStack releases. The ESCloud can be used to carry large-scale cloud computing environments in critical business operations.
The ESCloud cloud management platform is highly open, and is independent of the different vendors at the device layer, allowing the Institution to still leverage elements of the old infrastructure. It also optimizes platform computing, storage and network capabilities. The ESCloud provides three levels of access management for Operation and maintenance. Each research group or school/faculty can allocate resources according to actual needs and then manage it.
The Tsinghua University Institute is the first educational research organization on interdisciplinary Information Technology, and is dedicated to the correlation and cross-buildup of Computer Sciences and Physics. It is also the leader of research on quantum information in China.
"EasyStack helped the Institution to use the ESCloud all-open sourced cloud computing solution to build the largest production/education/research all-in-one OpenStack cloud environment. This environment is now being used in big data & analytics, teaching and researches of distributed educational system while providing paid cloud services to other faculties and schools. The ESCloud has greatly reduced procurement and operational costs, enabling precious staff manpower for more worthwhile research projects," says the Assistant Dean of the Tsinghua University Institution for Interdisciplinary Information Sciences.
