Fremont, CA: Artificial intelligence (AI) is making huge waves in the food and beverage industry as it is in many other industries. More and more organizations in the industry recognize the potential of AI to boost efficiency and profits, reduce waste, and protect against supply chain disruptions. It is all part of what's known as Industry 4.0 or the increasing emergence of smart technology such as AI in traditional industries such as food and beverage.
By "AI," people simply mean machinery and technologies that are utilized to complete complex tasks that previously required human thought. AI in the food industry includes a variety of technologies, ranging from robotics to machine learning. Here are five ways artificial intelligence is improving the food and beverage industry:
Improved Supply Chain Management
One of the highest priorities for food manufacturers is the ability to manage supply chains effectively. Leading companies are now using artificial neural network-based algorithms to supervise shipments at every stage of the supply chain, improving food safety standards and enabling complete transparency.
AI in the food industry can also generate accurate forecasts for inventory and pricing management. This type of predictive analysis keeps food companies ahead of the competition, enabling them to avoid waste and unnecessary costs. Modern food supply chains are more complex as well as fragmented than ever before, but artificial intelligence (AI) allows businesses to gain a better understanding, ultimately improving their ability to increase revenue.
Efficient Cleaning Process
All food production equipment and machinery must be cleaned to the highest standards. This is done to prevent not only pathogen contamination of food but also allergen cross-contamination. Unfortunately, this comes at a cost—both in terms of time and money.
This is beginning to change thanks to cutting-edge artificial intelligence (AI) technology. Utilizing optical fluorescence imaging and ultrasonic sensing, the University of Nottingham's Self-Optimizing-Clean-In-Place (SOCIP) system scans the food remains left in machinery after use. Because equipment does not need to be disassembled, this allows for a more optimized cleaning process in which the amount of water required is lowered by 20-40 percent and the cleaning time is reduced by 50 percent.
