How Artificial Intelligence can Benefit OTT Platforms

Annie Johnson, APAC CIO Outlook | Monday, August 23, 2021

The battle between various OTT platforms has intensified significantly. Artificial intelligence (AI) for over-the-top (OTT) services can help firms remain relevant in this cutthroat environment.

FREMONT, CA:  According to research, around 182.5 million individuals in the United States would consume content via OTT services by the end of 2019. This is more than half of the US population, creating enormous financial prospects for OTT service providers. However, as competition has increased, it has been more difficult for players to maintain market relevance. Even the most prominent firms are not guaranteed to keep market share if they cannot differentiate themselves from their competition. Besides offering engaging and exciting content at the heart of OTT services, businesses may employ modern technology such as artificial intelligence for OTT streaming, user recommendation, and data collection to keep their audiences engaged. Here's how AI might assist OTT platforms in overcoming obstacles and sustaining or even growing their user base.

    Video Replay Service

Although bandwidth speeds have grown recently, the video quality of web content on OTT platforms has not. Data and bandwidth requirements have increased dramatically with the availability of streaming content in 4K video resolution. This can result in numerous buffering issues, which may drive subscribers away. As a result, resolving the video buffering problem becomes critical. According to the network quality, the AI system can intelligently assess the video quality. It is capable of automatically switching between multiple video quality settings without impairing the user experience significantly. If the user does not encounter any buffering issues, he can remain engaged on the site. Additionally, AI can learn the user's preferred video quality over time and switch to it automatically anytime the user plays video material.

    Providing Individualized Content

Individuals are more likely to watch shows that are related to their interests. If OTT platforms have a more excellent grasp of their consumers' preferences, they can give better services to them. OTT providers can utilize AI to learn about their users' preferences, favorite shows, least favorite shows, and the amount of time spent on their platform. Businesses can use this information to recommend other shows that are comparable to the user's preferences. They can even correlate changes in user behavior to changes in the show's storyline by analyzing their viewing patterns. If viewership declines as a result of a plotline or character shift, the producers can adjust accordingly.

Artificial intelligence already has numerous uses in the entertainment and media industries, and its use can be expanded to OTT platforms. Businesses may gain a deeper understanding of their clients through the usage of AI for OTT. Artificial intelligence will continue to grow and evolve as technology advances. This can assist firms in surviving, if not outperforming, their competitors in the OTT platform war. With the current trends in the OTT business, it can completely replace cable TV services, and hence the usage of AI cannot be overlooked.
