    How Technology is making Cities

Apac CIO Outlook | Friday, February 01, 2019
    Tweet

Today, smart cities are using technology like artificial intelligence, machine learning, the internet of things and data analytics to relieve pressure from infrastructure and environment. The smart city uses the data collected from the people, vehicles, building, and infrastructure to improve citizen’s lives and also minimize the impact of the city on the environment by constantly collecting data to maximize efficiency.  The smart cities of tomorrow require proper foresight, planning and technologically enhanced connectivity, sensors, and devices to improve the population’s living experiences by operating as one big data-driven ecosystem.

    Smart Energy Management

To reduce utility, maintenance, and high energy consumption, the old infrastructure is replaced with energy efficient LED bulbs. This Smart lighting provides a longer lifespan for streetlights, improvement in public safety and a decrease in overall electricity and maintenance cost.

Smart energy management uses IoT sensors to monitor energy use. All data is collected into a modern platform that monitors energy use and efficiency. Machine learning and analytics are deployed to analyze and energy consumption data to save money on utility bills and reduce carbon footprint. Solar energy and wind energy produced are fully integrated into the roads, buildings and residential areas as a clean energy solution.

    Security and privacy

All the data collected, protocols and communications must be protected with advanced security architecture to keep the data away from malicious agents.

    Sensors and measurement

Smart cities collect data from all the aspects of the ecosystem. The smart city then uses a corresponding, tiered architecture for processing that data and acting on the derived conclusions.

    Smart Transportation

A lot of companies created vehicles that will play a major role in the smart city. Vehicles are now fully autonomous; cars are capable of understanding their surrounding environment to make decisions. Self-driving vehicles, traffic lights that adjust based on vehicle flow, and smart pavement that provides public Wi-Fi access is making cities smarter. Transport system collects data about the movement of pedestrians, vehicles and traffic rates through sensors, which helps in reducing vehicle traffic, smooth and safe flow of traffic.
