VMware, a subsidiary of Dell technologies which provides cloud computing and platform virtualization services announced that it is acquiring Heptio, a company which provides support for an open kubernetes ecosystem. The decision to acquire Heptio comes as an effort by VMware to extend its reach into containerized applications. Kubernetes was originally designed by Google and is now managed by Cloud Native Computing Foundation. Kubernetes is the fastest growing software infrastructure platform in the IT industry today. Heptio focused on creating an upstream Kubernetes distribution instead of creating another sanctioned Kubernetes distribution. Heptio expertise in building tools to validate an on-premise customer’s Kubernetes environment. The decision to acquire Heptio comes as the VMware’s effort to extend its reach into clusters based on kubernetes.

IT organizations are looking for options as kubernetes distribution service providers are providing many extensions to run an application. For example, VMware includes VMware NSX network virtualization software as the instance with PKS. IT organizations need to standardize on a specific kubernetes distribution network to run their application on a cluster as applications that run on different distributions are already portable. To extend a company’s data security, storage, and networking services, VMware is deploying kubernetes on top of a virtual network. Acquiring Heptio has made VMware a kubernetes force to reckon with. This move will extend its command over enterprise IT as companies are slowly moving towards containers running on kubernetes. VMware has been constantly providing support to organizations whenever and wherever it is required.

Paul Fazzone, senior vice president and general manager for the Cloud Native Apps Business Unit at VMware, said “ Heptio technologies will be employed to advance both the Pivotal Container Service (PKS), a distribution of Kubernetes optimized for VMware environments developed in collaboration with sister company Pivotal Software, and the portfolio of VMware management tools that can be applied to multiple distributions.”
