Micro data centers: The Way Forward

By Apac CIO Outlook | Thursday, August 08, 2019
    Tweet

The gain in popularity of Cloud technologies has changed the way enterprises look at data centers. Although data centers are still on the scene and serving a substantial number of companies, they are on the verge of decline. Rather than going obsolete, these data centers are now undergoing a makeover and taking the form of Micro-Data Centers (MDC).

Micro-data centers are necessarily a miniature version of the data center that has a much smaller footprint and serves purposes that conventional data centers do. These rack-level systems are compact, predesigned, and have integrated operations with less than ten servers and a hundred virtual machines.

The demand for the micro-data center has increased gradually and is expected to grow further. Numerous factors can be credited, for this increasing demand. Evolving technologies like edge computing, 5G, IoT based devices, and hybrid cloud architecture are the primary cause of the growing needs of micro-data centers. Micro-data centers also pose as a good option when one looks to cater to temporary requirements. These MDCs can take up temporary increases in traffic and ease functioning, thereby reducing the latency. What works best for these MDCs is the fact that these are not energy intensive. Opting for MDCs can lead to savings in energy cost. The design of MDC also works in their favor. Small and quiet, these can fit in most places.

The prospects for Micro Data Centers are exciting and vast in number. They can be instrumental in many sectors. With a rising number of devices getting connected to the internet every day, the processing requirements are going up. All the facilities that are available today are more or less dependent on the internet and data processing. In these cases, the chances of traffic overload cannot be ruled out. A crash in the essential services like that of automated transportation systems, medical management data, or manufacturing processes can cause a lot of inconveniences. Micro-data centers can help solve these problems precisely.

Deploying these data centers on the floor of the activity can enhance the processing speed and reduce latency, thereby, improving efficiency and preventing halts in essential services. Retailers, financial management firms, telecommunication firms, manufacturers, and many other organizations are bound to be benefitted immensely from these micro-data centers.
