Fifty companies from all over the world have been named winners in the 2021 Corporate Startup Stars awards with Pfizer taking first place, AXA, second and Xiaomi third place.

FREMONT, CA: For the sixth year in a row, startups were asked to nominate the enterprise that was most active in open innovation for the prestigious Corporate Startup Stars Awards. The Awards were first introduced by Mind the Bridge in 2016, as a part of the European Commission’s Startup Europe Partnership project and have now been scaled up to a worldwide level owing to a partnership with ICC.

In an official award ceremony hosted by the French Secretary of State for the Digital Economy Cédric , Pfizer took the first position in the global ranking, followed by AXA and Xiaomi. 50 companies from around the world have been recognised for their efforts: 25 as Global Corporate Startups and the remaining 25 as Global Open Innovation Challengers.

Pfizer, the Grand Prize winner for 2021, has pursued Open Innovation with purpose in a systematic manner, involving people from various nationalities, genders, and generations.  The company’s accomplishments are the result of targeted innovation activity rather than a “one-off stroke of luck”.  Pfizer has a comprehensive open innovation strategy that includes collaborations, investments (Resilience, LianBio, Pyxis ),  intrapreneurship and venture builder (a notable example is Cerevel Therapeutics), and acquisitions Pfizer's collaboration with startup BioNTech exemplifies this by bridging national age, and gender divides to serve the world.

Open innovation often takes place in sectors similar to the core business and Axa has been established as an international benchmark. Axa is appreciated for its efforts in developing emerging technologies and business models in spaces such as health tech, mobility and cybersecurity.

Xiaomi is recognized for its success in implementing an open innovation strategy that combines an ecosystem approach along with startup financing. To date, Xiaomi has invested in hundreds of IoT businesses, as well as established a team of industrial designers committed to assisting portfolio companies in developing products that align with Xiaomi's vision and quality requirements.
