SAN JOSE, CA: A latest report from “Cisco Global Cloud Index” projects on the growth of cloud traffic in enterprises for better efficiency and scalability. The report finds the traffic flow to increase from 3.9 zettabytes (ZB) to 14.1 ZB by 2020.

Enterprises are achieving better operational efficiencies and flexibility deploying data center virtualization. The expansion of software-defined networking (SDN) and network functions virtualization (NFV) will help to streamline cloud traffic for improving the end result. The report finds 60 percent of the data centers to be equipped with SDN/NFV platforms in the forecast period and the number of hyperscaledata centers to increase from 259 to 485.

    Major Highlights of the Report

The report highlights that business and consumer workloads sectors will mark a boost of 2.4 and 3.5 percent respectively in the forecast period. The report also finds IoT workloads to account for 22 percent of the entire business workloads and the video streaming sector to contribute 34 percent. The other sectors such as social networking, and search workloads are further expected to employ for the growth of data center virtualization, reports Cisco.

“In the six years of this study, cloud computing has advanced from an emerging technology to an essential scalable and flexible part of architecture for service providers of all types around the globe,” said Doug Webster, Vice President of Service Provider Marketing, Cisco. “Powered by video, IoT, SDN/NFV and more, we forecast this significant cloud migration and the increased amount of network traffic generated as a result to continue at a rapid rate as operators streamline infrastructures to help them more profitably deliver IP-based services businesses and consumers alike.”
