FREMONT, CA: Warehousing activities and processes are still largely dependent on manual labor. But new technologies such as cloud computing augmented reality and virtual reality, drones, robots, internet of things and automated vehicles are transforming the world of warehousing. With these innovative technologies warehouse planning and analysis is expected to evolve to the next level.

Today's inventory management requires manual scanning of items, which is time-consuming and can be prone. It is impossible to keep track of all activities manually. Drones and robots are examples of this. Drones can be deployed successfully to upgrade warehouse activities. Special aerial drones with optical sensors are the best example of this. They can help locate an item in a warehouse. This will facilitate fast detection of individual items and prevent inventory mismatches. Drones are outperforming other technologies in speed and accuracy.

Robots are also contributing to the process of warehousing today. Packing at times involves customization and co-packing from customers and is time-consuming labor requiring flexibility. Co-packing involves opening a box, taking the items out, applying a sticker and repacking the item. A collaborative robot designed to work safely around humans can improve this process. They can handle objects with their hand like extensions and are able to perform any task as like humans. Robots have the ability to learn new task on spot allows the necessary flexibility.

Handheld smart devices are also one of the key factors that change warehouse management. It can be used to scan items to speed up the checkout process. Business activities can be continued when away from the office with the help of these devices.

Driverless vehicles can be employed to promote safety. Image recognition technology can be employed in stores for shelf monitoring. Apart from this internet of things devices can change the way inventory management, task management, and vehicle routing work.

In the coming years, automation will continue to replace the traditional manual labor roles and monotonous tasks and will improve productivity, flexibility and reduced costs.
