    Useful Mobile Device Security Tips

One can set up a numeric code, a swipe pattern, or fingerprint recognition to keep thieves and prying eyes away from the information on their devices. One can check Settings/Security to see what screen lock options are available.

Fremont CA: We carry a lot of information with us on our smartphones and tablets. Even if the information is not physically stored on our devices, it is accessible via apps and other cloud services.

Whatever way we use our smartphones and tablets, it is critical that we take precautions to keep our data safe from hackers and thieves. Some may attempt to steal data through open connections, while others may attempt to steal the device itself. Here are seven suggestions for keeping your data and devices safe.

    Update Apps and Operating Systems

While updates can fix bugs and other minor issues in apps or operating systems, they also address security concerns. It is critical that one keeps all of their devices' apps and operating systems up to date.

    Lock the Device

One can set up a numeric code, a swipe pattern, or fingerprint recognition to keep thieves and prying eyes away from the information on their devices. One can check Settings/Security to see what screen lock options are available.

Be Careful with Open Wi-Fi Networks

Although free Wi-Fi is convenient at the local coffee shop, most networks are open, which means they lack a firewall or other security features. While this is acceptable for web browsing, it is not acceptable for online banking or other sensitive transactions. When in doubt, it is better to use wireless data plan.

    Only Download Reputable Apps

Only download apps from trusted sources, and even then, proceed with caution. Some malicious apps can get past the vetting process. One should look for apps with high ratings, a large number of downloads, and well-established developer support.
