Windows Server IoT 2022 is the new IoT for Microsoft

    Apac CIOOutlook | Sunday, March 28, 2021

Based on the current Windows Server 2022, Microsoft released a new version of Windows Server IoT. The latest version is intended for appliances.

FREMONT, CA: A new version of Windows Server IoT was released by Microsoft, based on the existing Windows Server 2022. It serves the same underlying platform like Windows Server but is not intended as a general-purpose server. It particularly intends to support a specific set of tasks and therefore, it comes with a dedicated set of licensing terms. The Internet of Things has now become an end-to-end infrastructure that supports building out edge computing systems. Microsoft has been working out to supply this platform across Windows and Azure.

Windows Server IoT acts as a single-purpose hub for all the embedded systems and is known as Embedded Systems and Storage Server. In addition to device support, it enables to run code that collects data from all the industrial IoT sensors for further processing. With the release of Windows Server IoT 2022, Microsoft often seeks servers as a platform to run line-of-business applications, save and share data, and access them from PCs and laptops, and these operations are also for machine-to-machine interactions. Additionally, Microsoft is slowly incorporating hybrid cloud properties into the Windows Servers which grants access to features like SMB file compression to speed up moving large amounts of data around a network. If the new Server is used as a data aggregation hub, SMB compression aids in reducing bandwidth requirements between installs on edge and analysis, besides machine learning systems in the data center or running in the public cloud.

Standard, Datacenter, Storage Standard, Storage Workgroup and Telecommunications are the five different versions of Windows Server IoT 2022. Standard and Datacenter are self-managed equivalents of Microsoft’s Azure Stack appliances. These servers can be a part of the Active Directory and do not expect the code to change while running code and containers on the edge of a network. The other versions of Windows have specific tasks assigned and can only be bought with hardware from OEMs. Storage Standard is assigned the role of a gateway to the storage arrays meanwhile, Storage Workgroup works as a storage system for up to 50 users. Both these provide a Windows-based storage controller that can take up the benefit of new security features in Windows Server 2022. The final version, Windows Server IoT 2022 Telecommunications, allows plugging a telecoms server into the network and handles the users from Active Directory.
