FREMONT, CA: An unremitting pandemic, international conflict, and general uncertainty have spotlighted every nation's requirement to become more agile and adaptable. Local governments can more effectively serve citizens and travelers in a rapidly changing world by implementing flexible policies and solutions.
To capture this ability to quickly adapt and respond to challenges, US News & World Report introduced their new Agility index as part of their annual best countries rankings. Following are the countries that turn out to be extremely agile in their policies and their applications.
The United States
The country is ranked at the top of the Agility index. Though the US may not have implemented a mandated lockdown like several other Western countries, its market-driven economy quickly adapted to the myriad of challenges brought about by the Covid-19 pandemic.
Australia
The country ranked second in the index, with its most substantial scores in responsiveness and adaptability. Australia took a very different approach to the US, mandating strict lockdowns. The country swiftly moved from an elimination strategy to re-opening completely during the later waves, based on a nearly 95% vaccination rate among adults 16 and older.
South Korea
The country ranked sixth in overall agility and scored high in its ability to be highly dynamic and progressive. South Korea was appreciated for its early response to the pandemic, for keeping its case counts low, with aggressive testing and isolation for the infected.
Belgium
Though the country was placed 16th overall, Belgium performed greatly in adaptability sub rankings and outranked all of its European peers. Residents pride themselves on their ability to adapt, a cultural requirement after its history of occupation by the Romans, Dutch, Germans, and French.
Brazil
Brazil was the top-ranking South American country in the ranking due to its ability to be extremely dynamic. Though the government failed to effectively respond to the pandemic, the healthcare ecosystem was able to quickly adapt and vaccinate the large population of the country, with a nearly 100% vaccination rate in some of its largest cities.
