SkyLab: The Backbone of IIoT

At that time, the Housing and Development Board of Singapore, responsible for housing some 85% of Singaporeans and Permanent Residents, open up their roofs for solar panels deployment and the harvesting of clean energy. However, installing solar panels was just the beginning of a long and strategic initiative. The Solar Developer was required to quantify the production of energy at each apartment block, obtain relevant data from power meters, and monitor the performance of DC to AC inverters consistently. “When we initially took up this project, we had to develop a comprehensive and robust system that not only aggregates data from one device in one place but rather a network of devices dispersed across numerous locations across Singapore,” explains Stephen Ho, Group COO at SkyLab. In order to optimize this network of devices, SkyLab deployed a radio network utilizing microwaves to serve as the backbone of IIoT communication in a secured and scalable manner.
SkyLab demonstrated its ability to efficiently build IIoT solutions, empowering the Solar Developer to harvest energy effectively by utilizing pyranometers to measure the radiance of the sun and machine learning algorithms to analyze the production of energy.
“We are not just a solution provider; we assess the need for IIoT implementations in any project that we undertake and then leverage on the in-house technologies that we have developed and continuously improve upon,” states Ho. SkyLab ensures the end-to-end optimization of IIoT solutions through multi-faceted technologies such as edge computing platforms, multi-protocol middleware, and IIoT management platforms. The company is capable of aggregating data with instantaneous immediacy, paving the way for faster response time and efficient decision-making abilities through its multi-protocol edge computing platform. This platform is further bolstered by the SkyLab Transport Accelerator™ (STA), which the company refers to as its ‘secret sauce,” that helps in accelerating packets of IoT data through the network. Collectively, SkyLab harvests data on its edge platform to provide insights through predictive analysis, in addition to automating various manual processes.
SkyLab has also developed a marketplace on its indigenous data logistics platform, allowing native and third-party developers to deploy and utilize applications based on the need of the hour. This allows clients to stay relevant in the IIoT space by consistently upgrading themselves in accordance with industry standards and security protocols. SkyLab ventures into a myriad of industry verticals such as smart cities, smart building management, transportation, maritime, and smart utilities among others through the data logistics platform. However, the ingenuity of SkyLab’s portfolio lies in how the company precisely tailors its offerings solely based on the necessary prerequisites of a project. “We ensure that we deploy a technology that adds value to our clients’ operations. IIoT implementations follow the same principle: the need to assess business requirements before kick-starting a project is of paramount importance,” adds Ho.
The company achieves a streamlined orchestration of IIoT implementations through its sister organizations, SkyLab Networks, SkyLab Services, and SkyLab Innogram, led by a proficient team of industry veterans who are well-versed in smart city and township planning, cloud computing, artificial intelligence, telecommunications infrastructure and data analytics. Together, the three companies offer a promising avenue for organizations seeking state-of-the-art IIoT solutions.
