Thomsons Online Benefits: The Number One Global Benefits Platform

GM & Head of Operations - APAC,Francis Ng, Thomsons Online BenefitsFrancis Ng, GM & Head of Operations - APAC
The core purpose of providing benefits to employees is simple—attracting your preferred candidates, retaining the best employees, and creating a consistently great employee experience to keep them motivated. However, employee benefits management, especially for MNCs, is a big challenge and Francis Ng, GM and Head of Operations for Asia-Pacific at Thomsons Online Benefits, explains the reason for it. “With changing rules and regulations in every country, global management of benefits is very complex for MNCs and it can be difficult to find an effective solution. In addition, employees themselves are often unaware of the benefits on offer; which means the program is failing its core aim,” states Francis. So, Thomsons Online Benefits was founded in 2000 to address exactly these issues. Fast-forward a decade and a half, the firm’s innovative online employee benefits management platform, Darwin, is now being adopted by numerous companies across 89 countries. With employees and their dependents, there are over two million lives on Darwin and it’s translated into over 30 different languages. Darwin is a truly global solution that has revolutionized global benefits management and reporting for employers, transforming employee’s experience and engagement with their benefits.

The platform essentially streamlines two significant tasks in the benefits management process to enhance employee engagement.
One is to increase awareness of the benefits on offer by providing employees with complete visibility into their package and secondly, to minimize paperwork through online selection and automated administration. Once an employee logs into Darwin, they are provided with comprehensive but easy digestible information on every benefit allocated to them, including insurance, extra allowances, and rewards, and delivered through interactive content such as videos. Not only that, but the information presented is personalized according to an employee’s location, designation, and work status. As a result, employees have a complete understanding of all the benefits they are entitled to and the true value their company spends on them individually, in addition to their weekly or monthly salary.

When it comes to selecting benefits and creating a tailored program to suit their needs, Darwin continues to impress employees. By engaging with their benefits in this way, not only is their experience improved and their understanding of the benefits available increased, but commonly occurring errors are eliminated such as; providing incorrect benefit information to employees or accidentally missing employees out during benefits provisioning. In addition, Darwin ensures compliance with local regulations, and duly collects and shares the process data with the customer and the relevant third party payroll, insurance, and other benefits providers. This automates the entire global benefits management process end-to-end. “All the information you need is available at the click of a button. Employers can easily manage the whole benefits process and the amount they spend on benefits globally, as well as tailor it for local geographical markets, depending on the different benefits available and regional regulations,” remarks Francis.

Thomsons Online Benefits works with some of the world’s top employers including eight out of the top ten technology firms and five of the world’s leading banks, it has also won over 105 technology, industry and client awards. The company’s client success stories add further to its impressive credentials. For instance, a renowned pharmaceutical company was encountering challenges managing its benefits program across 40 countries it operates in. Darwin was implemented across all 40 countries in less than three years, boosting employee engagement with their benefits while seamlessly automating the entire process administration for the HR function.

Thomsons continually innovates and strengthens its platform to offer an increasingly personalized user experience across any device and location. By bringing more and more lives onto Darwin, they are continuously progressing towards their vision to “Change benefits. for good.”
