Unisys Corporation: Innovation through Digital Transformation

    Peter Altabef, President & CEO
In intriguing 144-year old genealogy traced through the timelines of two engineering pioneers— Burroughs Corporation and the Sperry Gyroscope Company—encountered a compelling narrative in 1986 with their merger that established Unisys [NYSE: UIS], as we know it today. Under the stewardship of industry veteran Peter Altabef, Unisys has been making giant strides in IT services delivery across diverse lines of business by rendering best-of-breed security solutions, advanced data analytics, cloud and infrastructure services, application services, and application and server software.

"Unisys fits in as a “go-to-partner” with its secure business technology solutions and mission-critical it services"

As enterprises focus on transforming into a digital ecosystem, Unisys fits in as a “go-to-partner” with its secure business technology solutions and mission-critical IT services. Behind Unisys’ efficiency as a partner in digital transformation is its single-mindedness in identifying and keeping pace with the major disruptive technologies— big data, mobility, cloud computing, and cybersecurity. These technologies converge into the company’s featured products for advanced security, mobile application development and integration services, cloud and enterprise compute services that help clients reap benefits ranging from substantial cost savings to accelerated pace of operations.

For enterprises keen on scraping their legacy infrastructure in favor of an agile and cost-effective alternative, Unisys offers them an exhaustive suite of cloud and enterprise computing services. The firm endeavors to help their customers leverage the power of cloud to align their IT infrastructure to their business objectives. As a part of their advisory services, the cloud computing experts at Unisys guide the clients through the entire process of developing a cloud strategy, assessing transformation, design and implementation, and managed services to help them achieve a cost-effective software-defined enterprise framework.

Additionally, Unisys’ cloud and data center managed services help clients with operations management of their data centers and private/hybrid clouds, on a daily basis. With a global Service Management Platform and a network of cost-effective delivery centers worldwide, Unisys offers turnkey integrated operation and management of private and hybrid clouds. Also, catering to the data-driven enterprises’ need for the right analytics tool, the firm provides them with an exceptionally competent analytics tool—Unisys Analytics Platform (UAP)—that combines a cloud platform with custom analytics. To advise their clients on how to leverage their enterprise data to increase productivity and improve decision-making, Unisys has an army of data scientists with global expertise in data aggregation, analysis and machine learning.
With an extensive library of pre-defined predictive models that are tested and ready for rapid deployment, Unisys clients derive actionable intelligence in threat assessment, system performance, customer behavior, and numerous other metrics for informed decision-making in both government and business sectors.

    Cyber Resilience Rebooted

To thwart the advanced cyber security threats faced by enterprises and government agencies, Unisys has incorporated a unique cryptography approach delivered through a comprehensive software-based security portfolio—Unisys Stealth. An innovative, software-based security product, Unisys Stealth actively guards sensitive data-in-motion from getting compromised and conceals the infrastructure endpoints in a way that they are "virtually invisible" to the unauthorized users outside and within the enterprise. The competency of Unisys Stealth has been backed by U.S. National Security Agency as they have designated it eligible to secure highly sensitive systems for governments worldwide. By facilitating the consolidation and virtualization of networks, servers, and cloud architectures and supporting regulatory compliance requirements (PCI), Unisys Stealth enables customers to divert the resources saved to their core business. A recently launched Unisys Stealth software application— Stealth(aware)—enables organizations to deploy enterprise-wide, micro-segmentation security across extended networks with a single click of a button. Stealth(aware)’s “easy to install” advanced security protects the digital economy of enterprises of any size with the best-in-class cybersecurity options. "The best cyber protection not only needs to work everywhere, operate efficiently and keep you ahead of the threat, but it must also be able to be easily deployed,” emphasizes Altabef. “Stealth(aware) meets these standards across the board.”

Unisys’s prowess to clinically address the mission-critical security challenges of enterprises and government agencies was accorded a special distinction when Altabef was chosen to serve on the National Security Telecommunications Advisory Committee (NSTAC) last year. Adding to their cache of innovative security offerings, Unisys has also launched a set of cyber resilience services modeled on U.S. Department of Defense cyber wargaming methodology. The firm has customized the wargaming methodology and adapted it for use by their business and government clients. By identifying potential threat scenarios and categorizing them as "bound to happen," "critically dangerous" and "out-of-the-box/never going to happen,” Unisys helps clients assess their preparedness to manage a crisis event as well as the suitability of its incident response plan.

    The “Zero-Click Banking” Initiative

With a focus on architecting business transformation in the financial services sector, the firm delivers a robust set of services and solutions based on the bimodal IT model that combines agility with stability. Unisys prolonged partnership with retail banks has been built atop a comprehensive suite of digital banking transformation solutions that balance convenience with security.

By identifying potential threat scenarios, Unisys helps clients assess their preparedness to manage a crisis event as well as the suitability of its incident response plan

Wings Financial Credit Union is one such client that zeroed in on Unisys’ expertise to implement a member-centric core banking system. A cooperative financial institution that manages $3.8 billion in assets for a member community of employees from 54 U.S. airlines, Wings Financial went through two mergers within two years and had tripled its assets since 2001. The high-growth credit union wanted to implement a system that supported their aggressive growth and expansion goals while enhancing their personalized service to deliver better customer experiences. To further their goals of augmenting operational efficiencies, Wings Financial partnered with Unisys to design and implement a "cocktail of enterprise solutions"—FIS MISER core banking application, a Unisys ClearPath Financial Services FS1800 Server using an EMC SAN for storage, and Attachmate DATABridge for integration with the credit union’s Microsoft SQL Server database. The member-centric core banking solution helped Wings Financial improve their new member on-boarding capabilities—1000 to 1300 new members a month—after moving to a state charter and facilitated the seamless conversion of 60,000 accounts and 180,000 members through the two mergers.

In a recent addition to their financial services products portfolio, Unisys unveiled their latest omnichannel digital banking portfolio—Unisys Elevate— to support financial institutions with the delivery of secure and “on-the-go” banking experiences. Unisys Elevate is deeply integrated with Unisys' Retail Banking Delivery platform and provides financial institutions with an end-to-end, digital banking software platform, and a comprehensive suite of applications to facilitate the origination of mortgages, loans, savings, and current accounts. The analytics engine behind Unisys Elevate in combination with the Unisys Stealth security suite provides banks with opportunities to boost operational and sales efficiency while ensuring that client applications and data are protected from threats.

With an intensive Unisys Channel Partner program in place, Unisys helps their VARs and embedded product partners to leverage it and contribute to client success. The program aims to foster a closely-knit and cooperative partnership based on active sharing of market knowledge and best-of-the-breed technologies. By adopting a channel-oriented approach, Unisys collaborates closely with partners to deliver some of the most innovative, reliable, and economical solutions in the market. In addition, the firm has a full-fledged strategic alliance program to collaborate and innovate with leading technology providers to deliver secure and cutting-edge products and services to their clients. "With data and systems secured by Unisys Stealth, clients are free to innovate and grow their businesses with a minimum level of anxiety prevalent in our digital world. At Unisys, we call this securing your tomorrow," concludes Albatef.
