The Pioneers in Surface Treatment Technology

Founded in 1951 by the inventor of Corona surface treatment, Verner Eisby, Vetaphone has a rich history of pioneering work in surface treatment technology. In the ’50s when writing or printing on plastic surfaces was a constant struggle, Verner invented the first Corona system that improved adhesion on packaging material. This process powered a new industry, enabling quality printing, coating, and laminating of plastic packaging products. Ever since, Vetaphone has been supplying the highest quality and most innovative Corona treaters worldwide that are efficient as well as cost-effective. Thus, with their ability to embrace change and constantly evolve with meaningful input, Vetaphone has shown precisely what separates leaders from the followers.

The company’s technology is intrinsic to the processing of a plastic surfaces, as it takes away the major problem of liquids (like ink) smearing on the plastic surface. The ‘smearing’ is due to the relative energy between the two surfaces, and the only way to solve the problem is to modify the surface of the plastic and increase its adhesive quality, known as the ‘dyne’ level. The process capable of this is called Corona treatment and it enhances the adhesion of the plastic surface making it possible for liquids to bond to the plastic.

Corona treatment is the most efficient and cost-effective mean of surface treatment.
But with the rise of more complex and sophisticated substrates, some applications have special needs that are difficult to meet. Vetaphone therefore recently developed a new method of surface treatment that offers the fine-tuning required by these more demanding materials – called iPlasma. This technique offers a different functionality from the traditional Corona treatment and finds its application in more specialised markets such as photovoltaics, speciality films and printed electronics.

Discussing the need for a new approach to surface treatment, Finn Hinze, Sales Manager Asia Pacific and Middle East, states: “Our R&D department works closely with the customers to ensure that all new substrates can be treated for any application required. This is why we have branched out into industries beyond print and extrusion, to for example electronics and furniture manufacturing. Our units offer the control needed for consistent quality that no other surface treatment manufacturer does.”

The continuous spirit of innovation in the company has made Vetaphone the leading global supplier of Corona and Plasma surface treatment solutions for all applications in the web processing industry, including extrusion, coating, flexo and gravure printing, laminating, and narrow web converting. Now in its second-generation family management, Vetaphone’s legacy is being taken forward by Verner’s sons—Frank and Jan Eisby—who keep the fundamental commitment of the company, to cater to the ever-changing demands of its customers.

With vast knowledge and experience of more than 67 years in the business, Vetaphone has developed an extensive portfolio of reliable, user-friendly systems that provide guaranteed dyne levels for high-quality adhesion alongside uniform treatment of both conductive as well as non-conductive substrates. For supporting its products and customers worldwide, the company employs factory-trained engineers, strategically located amongst its 65 agencies worldwide to offer local service and support.

Vetaphone continues its sustained growth from the past ten years, and is well on its course to achieve its targets for both 2020 and 2025. “With our dominance in the narrow web print sector, we are actively developing our market share in other areas of the industry such as wide web, converting and extrusion. We seek to grow our business in other areas of the wider plastics market, which will play a key role in our long-term future,” states Hinze.
