Mabiejoy Garcia, Head of Procurement, Summit Media (Summit Publishing Co., Inc.)

Mabiejoy Garcia, Head of Procurement, Summit Media (Summit Publishing Co., Inc.) approach to procurement leadership is deeply rooted in the realities of operational work. She began her career at the rank-and-file level, performing the foundational tasks that keep procurement running day to day. Those early experiences gave her a heightened appreciation for the complexities of the function, from process gaps to policy constraints and system inefficiencies. More importantly, they instilled in her the belief that meaningful organizational change starts with understanding the small, everyday actions that drive larger outcomes.

This hands-on exposure continues to shape Garcia’s leadership philosophy today. She has seen how routine tasks, when executed with intention, discipline and integrity, can influence strategic outcomes. This connection between operational excellence and organizational impact guides her as a leader. For Garcia, continuous improvement is not a one-time initiative but a mindset that must be embedded into the culture.

Balancing Cost and Quality Starts with Understanding People

Modern procurement demands far more than cost reduction. It requires striking a strategic balance among cost-effectiveness, supplier performance and quality outcomes. To achieve this, one critical capability stands out: stakeholder relationship management.

Effective procurement leaders engage deeply with internal stakeholders to understand not only their requirements, but also the operational drivers and risks

influencing their decisions. This level of collaboration reveals insights that spreadsheets cannot capture. It exposes nuances in user requirements, highlights inefficiencies in workflows and maps the true expectations of end-customers.

Externally, strong partnerships with suppliers provide access to innovation, market intelligence and competive opportunities. These relationships help ensure that procurement decisions are not solely price-driven but instead aligned with long-term business value. In moments of disruption whether economic, geopolitical or industry-specific these partnerships also become critical in managing risk, securing supply continuity and enabling rapid response.

Balancing cost and quality, therefore, is not a mathematical exercise. It is an integrated approach that connects people, processes and strategy.

Turning Market Volatility into Managed Risk

Agility must be anchored in robust risk management practices. By applying structured mitigation strategies, we can respond to emerging challenges with clarity and precision.

It is equally important to regularly review existing processes and policies to ensure alignment with evolving business needs. Organizations that proactively streamline and modernize their procurement frameworks are better positioned to adapt to volatility and maintain operational continuity.

Technology Is Easy, Alignment Is Harder

1. Organizational readiness. Digital transformation requires aligned people, processes and capabilities. Change management plays a critical role, and without it, technology adoption becomes an uphill challenge.

2. Leadership alignment. Technology investments demand clear justification, yet many organizations still struggle with limited data maturity. When data insights are lacking, it becomes difficult to demonstrate the strategic value of digital tools.

3. Choosing the appropriate solutions. Selecting between off-the-shelf platforms and internally built solutions remains a challenge, often constrained by budget, talent or existing infrastructure. Many organizations aspire to advanced technologies such as agentic AI, but the most fundamental question persists: Where should we begin?

Start with the Work, Grow into the Vision

Start small, but maintain a long-term vision. Beginning at the operational level cultivates a deep understanding of processes, data needs and system behavior, all essential foundations for effective leadership.

As you grow, let ambition fuel your pursuit of meaningful impact. Credibility is earned through commitment, discipline, integrity and results. When work is done with purpose and passion, it speaks for itself and no effort is ever wasted.
