    Yanmar: Toward a Sustainable Future

    Takao Yajima, Director

    Yanmar for A Sustainable Future

A dynamic, global manufacturer of industrial machinery with business interests that cover agricultural machinery, construction machinery, energy systems, industrial engines, large and small marine engines and components, Yanmar strives to solve the challenges its customers face through its advanced diesel engine technology. With a history that goes back over a century, Yanmar now looks to its next 100 years, tackling customers’ challenges with advanced technology from remote sensing with drones to electrification, robotics and autonomous machinery.

But it all began more than a century ago in a rural village in Japan, when Yanmar’s founder, Magokichi Yamaoka, left home to try his hand in the wider world.

    Building a Sustainable Future

Born to a farming family, Magokichi Yamaoka witnessed first-hand the harsh struggle of farmers and aspired to “reduce the burden of the common laborer through the power of machinery.” Founding Yanmar in 1912, he perceived the tremendous potential of the diesel engine as a safe, next-generation, labor-saving power source providing a high energy potential. Yamaoka also recognized that the diesel engines of the time were too large and unwieldy to be of practical use on farms. Unrelenting in his efforts, Yamaoka succeeded in creating the world’s first compact and practical diesel engine for agriculture, in 1933. Yamaoka worked to bring the diesel engine into the agricultural market and popularized it in a range of agricultural equipment.

From sprawling fields to the oceans and our global cities, Yanmar is active in every part of the planet Earth that touches our lives

Yanmar proceeded to expand and fortify the application of diesel engines beyond agriculture. The company was among the first to develop diesel engines for use on fishing vessels during Japan’s food crisis. Yanmar also manufactured and sold construction equipment to meet the needs of rapid urban development and a strained labor force.

Yamaoka’s success at miniaturizing the diesel engine for practical use driven by his desire to serve society, combined with his knowledge of Japan’s limited resources, was embodied in his aspiration that “to conserve fuel is to serve mankind.”

    Towards a Sustainable Future

Yanmar has inherited the spirit of their founder, who sought to help their customers in overcoming challenges with food production and energy conversion to create a prosperous society in harmony with nature.
Today, the number of people employed in the agriculture and fishery industries is declining, while the agricultural workforce itself is aging. Improving food productivity and energy efficiency has become a global priority. Meanwhile, increasing urbanization and a more affluent society pose challenges for the urban environment—challenges Yanmar will meet with cutting-edge solutions for construction, air conditioning, power generation, and more.

Yanmar leverages their advanced technology cultivated continuously over the course of their history to offer customized products, solutions, and services helping their customers address their challenges and needs. Under the banner of its Brand Statement of “A SUSTAINABLE FUTURE”, Yanmar looks to technology to solve customers’ challenges realizing a fulfilling and prosperous society.

Firstly, Yanmar envisions ‘an energy-saving society,’ that offers greater access to waste-free, safe, affordable, and accessible energy. The company strives to develop highly efficient and safe engine technologies and systems that optimally leverage different energy sources. Secondly, for ‘a society where people can work and live with peace of mind,’ Yanmar leverages mechanization and automation technologies to enhance productivity, reduce worker burden, improve the safety and operability of machinery, and more.

Thirdly, for ‘a society where people can enjoy safe and plentiful food,’ Yanmar supports the entire food value chain from the field to the dinner table, facilitating the availability of delicious and nutritious food anytime, anywhere. And, Yanmar’s fourth vision aims to get the most out of work and play for ‘a society that offers an exciting life filled with rich and fulfilling experiences.’ For the purpose, the company develops and engages in community-oriented activities, including training and cultural development of the next generation towards more fulfilling lives.

Creating New Wealth and Value around the World

“From sprawling fields to the oceans and our global cities, Yanmar is active in every part of the planet Earth that touches our lives,” says Takao Yajima, Director at Yanmar Co. Ltd. With an outstanding reputation for being reliable and efficient, the company’s innovative solutions contribute to the monetary and social value of the community. Yanmar also develops equipment for industrial engines, marine business, component business, energy system business, construction equipment business, and more. To categorize, Yanmar benefits the three domains of sea, city, and fields.

Envisioning an ideal coexistence between man and the sea, Yanmar develops aquaculture and marine technologies involving shipping, fisheries, pleasure boats, and more. The company also builds infrastructure and machines that contribute to energy savings, cogeneration and energy management, comfortable urban living, and more in cities.

    Smart Agriculture with Yanmar

According to UN estimates, the world’s population is set to grow to 9.7 billion by 2050, with a rise in global food demand of 60 percent on current levels.
Global agriculture faces additional challenges of a declining workforce that is also aging rapidly. Yanmar is helping the world to meet this challenge with its ‘Yanmar Smart Agriculture’ in products and services, such as intelligent autonomous tractors, ICT, and total support for operations in farm management. These include growth condition analysis, farmland improvement, agricultural machinery management, and more.

‘Yanmar Smart Agriculture’ supports the creation of a ‘food value chain’ that benefits both the farming community and consumers. The company provides farming support solutions comprising soil remediation, raising of seedlings, tilling and cultivation, harvesting and storage solutions, development of sales channels, and more. These solutions deliver enhanced productivity, lower environmental degradation, and greater economic efficiency, towards solving labor shortages, increasing output, and enhancing the stability of the agricultural landscape.

Yanmar’s autonomous agricultural equipment serves as the driving (or driverless!) force behind tomorrow’s agriculture. With its unmanned vehicle technology automating farm work from soil cultivation to harvest, more work gets done with less manpower. “Driverless tractors are an asset for the agricultural industry with a declining and aging workforce,” says Yajima. The Robot Tractor deploys sensors to navigate, and a cockpit camera allows a view of the operating conditions with a tablet. With GPS, the tractor’s positioning has additional precision, and the vehicle’s spacious cabin offers excellent visibility and comfort. Yanmar also develops unmanned rice-transplanters and combine harvesters and works to enhance the vehicles’ efficiency, safety, and accuracy on the farm.

An important component of Yanmar Smart Agriculture is the company’s proprietary SMARTASSIST-Remote system; an advanced agricultural management platform that utilizes state-of-the-art geolocation and ICT to optimize equipment management, increase efficiency and most importantly, raise profitability for farmers. “Employing a GPS and a communication terminal, the solution collects and stores extensive real-time data on operating conditions,” says Yajima. This data is deployed to optimize the farming operational conditions, protect agricultural equipment, and minimize expensive downtime. As a multi-industry application, SMARTASSIST is also being deployed for Yanmar’s construction equipment with plans for its application with marine pleasure boats, and more.

    Enriching All our Tomorrows

With a technology concept to deliver maximum prosperity with minimum resources, Yanmar offers maximum power with minimum energy, maximum harvest with minimum labor, maximum comfort with minimum stress, and maximum happiness with minimum environmental impact. Under a changing social landscape, Yanmar has globalized and aims to mold a sustainable future that allows humankind to live in harmony with nature.

Yanmar Announces its Redesigned Compact Excavators

Yanmar Compact Equipment has introduced its new generation ViO80 and SV100 mini excavators.

According to Yanmar, the ViO80-7 and SV100-7 feature improvements to hydraulic efficiency, cab comfort and ease of maintenance. The models are the largest in Yanmar’s mini excavator line... e and appropriate for fleets and work in utility, construction, demolition and landscaping applications.

Setting these apart from previous models is the newly designed cabins, the Yanmar team explained. Each is built for comfort and operator experience. The upgraded space in each includes a new suspension seat, more foot space, ergonomic foot pedals and a wider cabin for easier entry and exit. Operators can survey the worksite more easily with increased cab glass area. Hot days are more tolerable with the included automatic air-conditioning, the cab is quieter and additional USB ports allow for convenient phone charging.

Yanmar packed each model with greatly increased performance. The 18,122 lb ViO80-7 features 18% more power over its predecessor with its new 67 hp Yanmar Tier 4 Final diesel engine. The 21,385 lb SV100-7 includes a 72 hp Yanmar Tier 4 Final diesel engine. Both machines provide operators with increased attachment performance with 20% more PTO flow rate. The ViO80-7 achieves a maximum dig depth of 14 ft, 3 inches while the SV100-7 can reach 14 ft, 11 inches.

The ViO80-7 features Yanmar’s zero tail-swing; the SV100-7 includes an ultra-tight tail-swing. The zero tail-swing design allows the excavator to rotate next to a structure with less risk of hitting it. The larger SV100-7’s ultra-tight tail swing has very little overhang. Both designs allow efficient work in tight jobsites that may be difficult for larger equipment.

Contractors can reportedly get more done in less time with the redesigned ViO80-7 and SV100-7. Improved engine output and hydraulics allow for more productivity and greater attachment performance. Those same improvements also allow for a 15% increase in work speed, 13% lower fuel consumption rate and 25% increase in travel speed on slope.

A new 2-Pump Load Sensing (2PLS) hydraulic system improves efficiency in both new models. The system increases pump flow rate under high loads to direct power where it’s needed and improve performance and saves about 13% on fuel consumption as only the necessary amount of flow rate is utilized.

Additionally, operators can grade more effectively with the machines’ floating blade function for smoother operation.

Yanmar’s ViO80-7 and SV100-7 also include new features that improve operator productivity and ease of use. Operators can see relevant machine information and options at a glance on the new 7 inch color LCD display. Options include PTO flow rate adjustment, Auto-Decel mode, a new passcode lockout feature and more.

Further, operators can easily see blind spots with the standard rearview and right-side cameras shown split screen on the display. An optional Surround View feature reduces blind spots further by showing a 360° view on the operator’s display. This can reduce the risk of accidents and help avoid damage when working in close contact with obstacles or walls.

The mini excavators both include Yanmar’s SmartAssist Remote telematics system. Using the integrated theft protection, the mini excavator’s owner can set a range from a specific location or a starting time, triggering SmartAssist Remote to send a notification if that range is exceeded. The telematics can also detect errors with electronic components and send notifications to service personnel and directly to Yanmar to streamline the diagnostic process. Additionally, the machine’s owner can view the operational status of the equipment in real time and view daily work reports that track use of the excavator, useful data that can improve jobsite productivity over time. Finally, SmartAssist Remote can track maintenance intervals and inspection items as well as notify the owner via email about upcoming maintenance requirements.

Contractors, fleets and operators have simpler maintenance and refueling access with the ViO80-7 and SV100-7. The new machines include an engine bay designed for maximum accessibility. The cabin hoods open quickly and put the generator, valves, radiator, oil-water separator and more right at maintenance personnel’s fingertips. A water contamination detection system takes reliability a step further.

An improved hydraulic quick hitch improves reliability and security of the attachment to the machine. The optional Double Lock Quick Coupler can be conveniently operated from inside the operator’s station.
