Cenote Solutions: Bringing an Empathetic Approach to Edtech

COVID-19 significantly impacted every walk of life; throughout the pandemic, students worldwide went through life changing circumstances, with children, teens, and young adults experiencing increased mental distress caused by long periods of isolation. At a time when their social and emotional engagement with peers should be at its peak, students were forced to process mental hurdles alone, which started affecting their academic pursuits as well. However, things are taking a turn for the better as more educational institutions are now deploying dedicated portals geared toward supporting students in coping with pressures beyond academia.

At the forefront of understanding the implications of the complexities of student life and helping them excel is Cenote Solutions. Its Student Pulsetm application safeguards the health and education of students worldwide as a safe and secure student support platform. Student Pulse can be directed at any cohort of students where timely and personalized engagement can add value. Essentially, it is able to support isolated and emotionally vulnerable students worried about their loved ones while in a distant land and those who struggle with learning and social hurdles, on campus or online.

Perhaps most importantly, Pulse helps to break down data barriers within the siloed operational and administrative processes often found in universities, colleges, technical and further education (TAFEs), and polytechnics. During the pandemic, Pulse was critical in ensuring students worldwide felt connected to their universities. As one student said in their feedback, “They are very concerned about the students and that makes us very happy. They care about our problems and are always there to help us, which is what students love to get from their University family.”
Pulse integrates data from multiple systems into a centralized data warehouse to identify and quickly assess a large set of students needing positive early intervention across every phase of the student journey. Its profiling technology acquires data on student engagements via multiple channels of micro-surveys, phone calls, text messages, chats, and conversations from existing learning management systems. It also boosts conversion rates using student data attributes to analyze attrition risks, enrollment in wrong courses, failures in an assessment or a unit, and personal life situations impeding the ability to study. In the case of postgraduates, Pulse links a student’s academic and personal preferences to relevant faculty members, ensuring a strong connection between applicants and their potential instructors.

“Student Pulse allows our customers to build a close relationship and enhance the sense of belongingness for students, focusing on giving the right encouragement and advice at the right time. It’s about how best to connect the right students with the right services while encouraging them to ask for support.” says Mark Sampson, CEO of Cenote Solutions.

Cenote Solutions’ Pulse uses campaigns to focus on the time of application, course and subject selection, orientation and first weeks of term, census dates, and other attributes. These are subject to continual change on the student journey, and Pulse’s Risk Attribute Dynamic Assessment Algorithm (RADAA) module profiles student risks and attributes for universities to engage accordingly. The calculation of daily risk scores provides valuable information on student risk trends beyond the conventional one-off point-in time flags.

Student Pulse allows our customers to build a close relationship and enhance the sense of belongingness for students, focusing on giving the right encouragement and advice at the right time

Unlike conventional surveys, often standardized with minimal customized questions, Pulse produces immediately actionable insights on dealing with problems on a highly personalized and contextualized basis. For institutions that already broadcast student programs, conduct evaluation surveys, dive into detailed analysis, and review insights, Cenote Solutions aids the adoption of a friendly and personalized language to understand the context of a student’s circumstances.

A success story highlighting Pulse’s transformative capabilities is that of a New Zealand polytechnic where, as a sector, there is a massive focus on equity groups, particularly Maori and Pacifica students and those with disabilities. Essentially, Pulse has opened the way to engage with and support these groups in the early stages of their education by creating a highly inclusive educational environment that is cost-effective and sustainable.

Cenote Solutions’ mission is to deliver the solutions that enable a long-lasting change in the way education and training providers engage with students. It aims to revolutionize the education sector by leveraging data-driven models of interventions that are personalized, contextualized and timed to reflect student needs as individuals at scale and with great value.
