GITN: An Enabler of Digital Governance

In the past, Malaysia has largely been known as a country that lags behind when it comes to adopting new technology and digital solutions. This scenario, however, is changing rapidly as the country is making efforts to become an e-economy nation. As the nation progresses toward the digital economy, government bodies need to digitize their services in order to cope with the public needs for faster, risk-free, and shorter life cycle of services at affordable prices. Malaysia-based Government Integrated Telecommunications Network (GITN)—a government managed network provider and convergence player— empowers such government institutions to create improved customer experiences.

GITN is a managed network service provider that supports the digital initiatives taken by the Malaysian government. The company optimizes and consolidates the public sector ICT network resources as well as enhances the delivery of public services. GITN connects all the government agencies and ministries using an integrated platform, which enables secure, efficient, and high-performance digital communication between them. The platform manages network integration and expedites the service delivery, allowing agencies to access intranet, extranet, and internet through single connectivity. “We are proud to declare that our managed services have had a tremendous impact on the operations and service delivery of the public sector ministries and agencies in Malaysia,” says Jamilah Husain, head of corporate services & management, GITN.

Providing services to every government institution is often a challenging task, which requires implementation of network infrastructure at various urban, rural, and remote locations. GITN approaches these problems by understanding the complexity of government agencies’ existing network, building structure, bandwidth capacity, internal applications, and governance process. After analyzing the network environment, GITN employs various technologies such as fiber, asymmetric digital subscriber line (ADSL), very small aperture terminal (VSAT), and mobile, along with managing continuous engagement and change management programs for government agencies. GITN has introduced several solutions and packages such as MyGov*Net.Edu to fulfill the requirements for high-capacity internet access across education, higher learning, and training centers operated by government bodies.

We are proud to declare that our managed services have had a tremendous impact on the operations and service delivery of the public sector ministries and agencies in Malaysia

The company has expanded its managed services globally by launching MyGov*Net.Global sites for secured communication across MyGov*Net, which provides seamless digital communication as well as central monitoring and support services via GITN network operation center (NOC). In addition to managed network services, the firm offers data, communication, voice, and video conferencing services to government institutions.

Currently, GITN is serving 10,059 sites across Malaysia including 253 agencies and 24 ministries as well as some government offices overseas. GITN also caters to the needs of public sector agencies in countries such as Singapore, Indonesia, Philippines, and Myanmar. In the near future, the company looks forward to expanding to Thailand, India, China, Hong Kong, U.S., and U.K. among other geographies.

Considering the fact that the unprecedented rise of technology has led to constantly changing customer requirements, GITN looks forward to upgrading its portfolio and introducing new solutions and services. GITN is keen on developing a connected ecosystem for digital government, managed cloud-based services, visibility as a service (VaaS), and cybersecurity solutions to increase efficiency, manageability, scalability, and cost savings for its clients.

Having completed 23 years in the industry, GITN is today the largest Internet Protocol Virtual Private Network (IPVPN) for the Government of Malaysia. For the GITN team, it’s all about addressing the needs of government agencies and continuing to be recognized as ‘Government Digital Enabler’.
