THANK YOU FOR SUBSCRIBING

Lyondell Basell has been recognized by APAC CIOOutlook Magazine as the recipient of “Top Plastic Tech Solution Companies,” based on our proprietary methodology, reflecting its position in the industry. This profile has been developed by the APAC CIOOutlook research and editorial team based on insights from an interview with Bob Patel.

Lyondell Basell
The Next Frontier in Plastic Technology

Lyondell Basell
Bob Patel, CEO
For many years plastic has acted as a base to create products of all sizes and shapes, the wares range from carry-bags to large piping and can be seen in almost every household across the globe. The non-bio degradable substance is considered to be highly flexible and durable making it one of the sought after raw-materials at manufacturing units, and other such industry areas seeking to tap into its potential overall uses in many production lines. However, the very volatile nature of the degradability of plastic has posed a significant threat to the environment and led to massive outcries for it to be replaced or to find newer and safer techniques of producing it while also adhering to global environmental safety norms.

On this front, LyondellBasell, a plastic technology solution and services provider, and industry pioneers with over 250 licensed production lines worldwide have been developing solutions for nearly 70 years. The firm delivers best-in-class manufacturing process technologies, catalysts, and technical services that offer consistent value to its customers. Leveraging LyondellBasell’s Research and Development, and integrated experience in plastic technology, clients are treated to a wide variety of resources that can be utilized to enhance manufacturing and business capabilities.

Continuing its impressive track record of innovation, LyondellBasell introduced a new polyolefin process, Hyperzone PE that it uses to create high-density polyethylene (HDPE) plastic with characteristic that is setting the bar for others in the industry to follow.

The Latest in Plastic Tech Innovations

Enabling customers to create the optimal balance between ease of processing and high performance end-product physical properties, LyondellBasell’s Hyperzone PE utilizes three distinct reaction zones in two reactors to produce HDPE that is tailored to meet customers demanding requirements.

Based on its extensive studies at its pilot plant, LyondellBasell has a deep understanding of the structural capabilities of the newly developed polymer structure. With improved process ability, superior toughness capabilities, and a formidable resistance to chemical reactions such as corrosion, customers can primarily benefit from the utilization of HDPE to create end-products. It helps manufacturers achieve source reduction in some areas where the plastic is actively in use, increasing productivity, and enhancing durability of final products including a stronger resistance to crack development in pipes.
Presently, LyondellBasell is in the process of building the first commercial Hyperzone PE plant in La Porte, Texas, and plans to begin its operations soon.

From Raw Material to Final Product

To create quality HDPE resins, it is necessary to breakdown raw materials through a chemically reactive process, and LyondellBasell has a range of solutions that enable the process to be comfortable and efficient.

LyondellBasell provides its services to allow firms within the plastic production space be safer and more environmental friendly

LyondellBasell’s top-notch process, “Hostalen,” is an advanced cascade process technology that has three reactors in a cascade through which it enables the production of multimodal HDPE resins. Used in manufacturing of film, blow molding and pipe applications, the high-performance resins are built with industry-leading toughness, impact resistance, high stress cracking stability, and processing advantages. LyondellBasell utilizing this technology produces an excessive of one million tons of HDPE resins annually at the organization’s multiple facilities that are wholly-owned or joint partner ventures.

Besides the highly-efficient Hostalen ACP process, LyondellBasell leverages a complete holistic solution “Spherilene,” a fluidized-bed, gas-phase process to create a suite of polyethylene (PE) products from linear low to medium and high density PE. The combination of flexibility with active capital management structures is the main factor for world-scale plants to adopt the technology. This proven and tested reliability enables the upscaling of the process design and allows users to work with capacities of up to 600 kt/a.

Industry Grade Education

Regarded as a premium leader in the plastic technology industry, Lyondell understands the significance of ensuring that clients gain the maximum potential of their acquired technology assets. For this purpose, the company employs a dedicated services team that applies in-depth expertise to aid its clients to get the most of the investments and achieve operational excellence.

“By leveraging the dedicated technology and operational resources within the Technology Services organization, along with LyondellBasell's impressive global expertise network in manufacturing, R&D, process design, safety, engineering, and product applications, our Technology Services has the right expertise to respond to your specific needs.” – reads an excerpt from LyondellBasell’s website.
LyondellBasell provides its services to allow firms within the plastic production space to be safer and more environmental friendly. It uses its knowledge of plant operations to train clients in quality control, maintenance and product applications that are delivered on-site by its technicians. To initiate pre-startup safety reviews through testing performance, the experienced operators and engineers assist consumers in accomplishing a smooth and stable operational procedure infrastructure.

LyondellBasell also accepts requests to provide process design and engineering services to conduct expansion feasibility studies, deliver customized engineering design packages for debottlenecking and a lot more applications within the plastic production space.

Building for the Future

Encouraged by its massive growth, and experience, LyondellBasell is pushing past its expansive boundaries and recently announced its agreement for a move into the Asian continent by opening its new facilities in the Chinese peninsula. As China makes up for more than 60 percent of the Asian chemical market, the project will utilize technology to significantly expand LyondellBasell’s footprint and participation in the rapidly growing olefins and polyolefins market. LyondellBasell currently operates three polypropylene compounding facilities in China. These facilities are located in Guangzhou, Suzhou, and Dalian.

"Lyondellbasell Provides Its Services to Allow Firms Within the Plastic Production Space to Be Safer and More Environmental Friendly"

Going forward, the company wishes to tap into the Asian market with high vigor and pomp that will see it enter the developing market with its definitive technologies and services, and LyondellBasell is currently in the process of partnering with some of the major plastic producers within the continent.

Realizing the value of good corporate governance, LyondellBasell pursues a consistent policy to enhance and improve its operational methods to be in line with the US and Dutch norms for best practices in plastic production processes.
