New Relic: Accelerating Successful Cloud Migrations

In today’s digitally-driven world, migrating to the cloud is no more a choice but a necessity. However, when it comes to cloud adoption, businesses fall prey to several challenges—from planning a cloud migration strategy, breaking down cloud migration into stages, ensuring zero downtime, and tracking the migration in real-time. Besides, migrating massive, complex, and interrelated workloads to the cloud often involve excessive investments and could introduce significant changes in their business operations. As such, a large number of companies still prefer operating entirely on-premises rather than moving into the cloud.

Established to mitigate these challenges is New Relic. The company enables enterprises to migrate faster and ensure the complete success of their cloud adoption initiative. “We deliver a comprehensive SaaS platform, New Relic One, which assists our customers at all phases of cloud adoption such as planning, migration, and optimization,” says Jillian Macmurchy, VP of Customer Solution Group for APJ at New Relic.

In the planning phase, New Relic builds a reliable business plan that is non-invasive to the clients’ environment. Unlike legacy solutions, the company frames a plan in hours and days. By establishing on-premise application performance to benchmark cloud performance, identifying application dependencies, and prioritizing the migration order, New Relic ensures customers’ preparedness for an efficient cloud adoption. “During the migration phase, we help our customers track their migration in real-time by offering end-to-end instrumentation and out-of-the-box integrations,” says Jillian. “With this, we enable enterprises to stay on track and monitor cloud-based metrics across the entire application and infrastructure stack, keeping the risk profile and costs low.
Then in the optimization phase, we help enterprises to optimize their cloud environment from both cost and technological perspective, enabling them to right-size their environment and ensure optimal performance.”

Entirely built on a SaaS architecture, New Relic’s platform reduces the need for additional installation or management from the clients’ side, making the solution easy-to-use and feasible for all types of business environments. With the potential to capture necessary data from customers' environments, the solution gives the entire workforce access to this data.

What makes New Relic unique is its platform’s openness and interconnectivity, which helps it ingest data from its instrumentation and other open-source tools. The solution has an infinite tracing capability that allows it to capture end-to-end traces from customers’ environments and highlight selected ones, on-demand. With its programmability feature, the platform offers a unique view of data for customers and partners. It also allows them to build their views on top of the data by leveraging the React framework's potential. “New Relic enables faster migration while helping customers to understand their environment, improve performance, and enhance uptime,” explains Jillian.

With such a value proposition, New Relic caters to a wide range of industries, including telecommunication, finance, and IT, to name a few. Recently, the company collaborated with Infomedia, a SaaS platform provider for the automobile industry, to optimize their cloud infrastructure. In their transition to a cloud model, they initially erred on the side of over-provisioning the infrastructure, having no focus on optimization. New Relic helped them eliminate excess infrastructure while maintaining their cadence of innovation. By optimizing cloud resources, New Relic helped Infomedia decrease its cloud spend by 40 percent.

Moving forward, New Relic envisions extending its reach to all geographies in the APAC region. Being a significant player in the open-source world, the company is planning to engage with several open-source projects and capturing customers' telemetry data. New Relic is also working on integrating applied intelligence to help customers proactively solve problems. Further, the company is ramping up its operations to align with the increased cloud adoption due to the recent COVID-19 outbreak. “As a socially responsible company, we are delivering our solution free of cost (for a period of time) to government and medical organizations to keep their platforms up and running, facilitating the fight against this global pandemic,” concludes Jillian.
