The prime feature of augmented reality is that it displays all the information in the driver's line of sight. This means the driver need not look at the dashboard, display screen, or mobile phone to get the driving data or information

FREMONT, CA: A large number of automobile manufacturers are deploying augmented reality features despite the stringent regulations on fully autonomous cars. The market for aftermarket augmented reality products is also increasing. Without a doubt, augmented reality will be the next disruptive technology in the automobile industry. However, it may be sometime before augmented reality actually becomes a reality on the roads.

The prime feature of augmented reality is that it displays all the information in the driver's line of sight. This means the driver need not look at the dashboard, display screen, or mobile phone to get the driving data or information. Heads up displays can be handy when it comes to navigation purposes. Routes and directions made available on the windscreen or as projections on the road will make road navigation not just more relaxed, but also more enjoyable.

Apart from navigational features and data from gauges, augmented reality can also be used to notify drivers about any emergencies on the route they are on, such as road closure, diversions, road accidents, and traffic congestion. Augmented reality can also enable drivers to create a co-passenger to ride along and interact with during the journey.

Various car manufacturers like BMW, Chevrolet, Jaguar, Lexus, Mazda, Mercedes-Benz, MINI, Toyota, and Volvo have deployed augmented reality features in their vehicles. These vehicles project various data like speed, gas levels, lane guidance, directions, and more on heads up displays. Some companies are also using augmented reality and mobile apps, which can act as a user's manual. Drivers can download the app and select which all features they want to be made visible on the heads up display. A lot of aftermarket displays are also available today, which means drivers don't need to invest in a new car to enjoy augmented reality features.

Traditionally, keeping the car from not crashing was entirely in the hands of the driver. This will change completely with the full-fledged deployment of augmented reality across the automobile industry. The rearview mirror is going to transform in many ways over the next few years. Features like blind-spot threat detection and active video feed will improve the quality of driving and help in reducing road accident cases.
