Microsoft recently announced that it is about to dismiss Alternate Credentials support to authenticate the users of its Azure DevOps Services.
Fremont, CA: Recently, Microsoft gave notice on its plan of dropping Alternate Credential support for the user of its Azure DevOps Services. The company announced that the change in support service is going to be enacted as early as possible for the new users, and the Alternate Credential will not work for the current users by the month of March 2020. Since Alternate credentials aren't supported by Azure DevOps services, the users of Azure will face difficulty.
Microsoft provides Alternate Credentials for the user authentication process to support the organizations that are connected with Azure DevOps Services with the help of "legacy tools." As per the Senior program manager of Azure DevOps Services, Corina Arama, Alternate Credentials supported by the Azure DevOps Services, is not a secure approach. One major problem is that Alternate Credential never expires, and it cannot be scoped to limit the access to Azure DevOps.
Microsoft's end of support timeline for the alternate credentials are as follows:
• Since December 9th, 2019, Microsoft will disable the Alternate credential setting for the organization that is using Azure DevOps Services. This initiative will be in effect for all the organization, latest by December 20th, 2019.
• The company has also planned to extend to its customers to switch to other services, which are much more secure than the present one.
• By March 2nd, 2020, the company is going to disable the Alternate Credentials for all Azure DevOps organizations altogether.
The company claims that in some cases, the use of alternate credentials might not be evident. As a consequence of this, the company has planned to send notice to both the end-users as well as the administrators by the mid of December. The company recommends the use of personal access tokens instead of the alternate credentials for better and secure service.
