Many IoT companies sell devices and provide users with default passwords, such as an admin username. To attack the computer, hackers only need the username and password. They use brute-force attacks to infect the machines once they know the username.

Fremont, CA: The Internet of Things (IoT) is one of the most common digital transformation technologies, linking everything to the Internet. It is at the heart of smart houses, self-driving vehicles, smart utility meters, and smart cities. However, there are nine significant security issues for the Internet of Things' future (IoT).

Over the past few years, the number of IoT devices has steadily increased. According to Gartner, there will be more than 26 billion connected devices worldwide by the end of 2021, up from just 6 billion in 2016.

Although IoT devices allow efficient communication between devices, automate tasks, save time and money, and provide numerous other benefits, there is one issue that users are concerned about—iot security. There have been particular events that have made IoT devices difficult to trust.

Several smart TVs and cash machines have been hacked, undermining confidence not only among customers but also among businesses. Let's take a deep dive into the most pressing security issues for the Internet of Things' future (IoT).

Hardware and applications that are no longer supported.

Since IoT devices are becoming more popular, manufacturers concentrate on making new ones rather than paying enough attention to security.

Most of these devices do not receive enough updates, and some do not receive any at all. This means that while these items are safe at the time of purchase, they become vulnerable to attacks as hackers discover vulnerabilities or security flaws.

If these problems are not resolved by the routine release of hardware and software updates, the devices remain vulnerable to attacks. Daily updates are needed for anything that is linked to the Internet.

Weak and default passwords are used.

Many IoT companies sell devices and provide users with default passwords, such as an admin username. To attack the computer, hackers only need the username and password. They use brute-force attacks to infect the machines once they know the username.

They use brute-force attacks to infect the machines once they know the username.  Consumers should be changing the default credentials as soon as they get the device, but most manufacturers don't say anything in the instruction guides about making that change. Not making an update in the instruction guides leaves all of the devices open to attack.

    Malware and ransomware

Because of the rapid growth of IoT devices, cyberattack permutations would be unpredictable. Cybercriminals have evolved to the point that they prevent users from using their own devices.

For example, an IoT-enabled camera that collects sensitive information from home or the workplace — and the device is compromised. The attackers will encrypt the webcam device and prevent consumers from accessing any data. Since the system includes personal data, they will charge customers a hefty fee to retrieve their data. When this happens, it is referred to as ransomware.
