Training the Overwhelmed Employee in 4 Simple Ways

By Apac CIO Outlook | Monday, November 25, 2019
    Tweet

The advent of mobile internet services has changed the way people work. There are tons of devices that help you stay connected with people in any corner of the world. People have begun taking work home and completing pending tasks at the expense of their personal time

Fremont, CA: The average employee is often overloaded with tasks and has a hard time juggling through the various activities at hand. These employees, like all others, are talented, intelligent, and dedicated. However, they are distracted by technology that they are unable to concentrate on the job. Employees tend to get easily distracted by technology that they are unable to perform to their true potential. Overwhelmed employees tend to lose track of time and surroundings, and they are so indulged in their tasks that they forget to look around them.

Interconnectivity has also increased a lot today. The advent of mobile internet services has changed the way people work. There are tons of devices that help you stay connected with people in any corner of the world. People have begun taking work home and completing pending tasks at the expense of their personal time. Reports have shown that two thirds of American workers have started working outside of their usual work time. There are a plethora of gadgets surrounding an employee. The smallest of movement on these devices and the employee gets distracted from his/her work.

An average employee is capable of keeping their attention on one subject for seven minutes before getting distracted. More often than not, this distraction is caused by a buzzing phone or an awakening screen. Mobile device users tend to check their phones nearly 150 times per day. With these many distractions, productivity gets hampered, creativity fizzles out, learning gets impaired, and productivity goes for a plunge. The overwhelmed employee not only hinders his/her growth but also acts as a drain on company resources. According to researches, 40 percent of men work more than 50 hours a week, and 80 percent of them wish to improve this situation to have a work-life balance. HR and training managers must realize the problem at hand and identify where all it has affected the organization.

Here are four ways in which you can train your overwhelmed employee.

    Pan Out the Learning

According to reports, students tend to retain knowledge better when they are given regular breaks between studying. Panning out the different employee training program allows the brain to get adequate breathing space before the next course. Chunking the content into micro modules that can be explained and delivered in short bursts is a good technique. Scheduling the learning sessions with proper gaps allows the employees to practice what they have learned. It is essential to ensure that the learning concept is repeated. The number of repetitions should depend on the complexity of the topic.

Easy to Search and Locate Data

One of the most time-consuming processes in an enterprise is finding out the correct data. Finding out previous data from archives can often be a cumbersome process, especially when you don't know where to look for. The company's database is a storage of a vast expanse of data which can be accessed by its employees. Going through folders and subfolders on the database can often turn into a maze for the employee. Make databases searchable and more comfortable to navigate through. Provide different kinds of search options like basic keyword searches to more advanced queries based on various parameters and filters. Learning communities and subject matter experts should be easily locatable inside the organization for employees. Creating strong and staunch rules will enforce the employees to work by the laws and will make it easier for them to navigate through the database.

    Self Directed Learning

Adults like to be in control of their life. They want to know what is happening and be in control of the situation by themselves. This is pretty much the case in employee training, as well. Stressed and overwhelmed employees prefer to be left alone in their own spaces. The burden of meeting clients and targets makes them yearn for a little bit of time to give attention to themselves. Giving them the reins to steer their own life and career will draw better results from them as well. Learning should not be restricted to one desk. Allowing the employees to pick the timings most suitable to them for learning will bring out the best results. By giving them an opportunity to pick up modules of their choice, they will pay more attention and increase the productivity of the company.

    Personalized Learning

In most cases, tutorial courses often contain a lot of generalized content that can be annoyingly boring. By creating personalized learning modules, the attention of the employee remains on the course subject. Customized content delivers exactly what a person needs to learn when a person needs to learn it. Provide tests at regular intervals to keep track of the progress of each employee. Based on the existing knowledge of an employee, prescribe the right course material required to develop the employee's skill set.
